Customer Questions & Answers

How and where do I get replacement grates for this stove?

Asked by: blp29
email or call USSC, United States Stove Company, manufacturer of this and the wonder wood heat circulators, Rural king has the wonder wood grate available at their stores during the season, they are now ready for the spring line up! Avoid too high level of ash pan ashes, this will cause the grate to warp, many buyers are not aware that the cast iron grate must have some air clearance between the grate and ash pan, on cold days the ash pan will have to be dumped 2 to 3 times due to the grate assembly distance to the shallow ash pan, wear 2 pairs of gloves and move quickly for the ash pan on a hot stove is very hot and will burn you. good luck to you.

Wonderdeluxe 1,800 sq. ft. Coal-Burning Stove / Circulator is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice stove I've had this stove for three months and it is working very well.I can get a long burn time out of it but find it necessary to load the wood all the way up to the top of the stove, not just to the fire brick as suggested in the manual. That way you can turn the thermostat up higher and still get a good burn time.(I'm not telling anyone not to follow the manual, just what I do to get the heat i need)Heats my small house(1000 square feet,+600 in basement) easily from the basement.Very easy to light and load, never any smoke in the house if you crack the door for five seconds before opening all the way

Rated 3 out of 5 by from B2350 wonderlux heat circulator This stove is fast heating, faster cooling due to thin steel construction, long narrow firebox accepts wood up to 22 inches long, ash pan too small and hot to dump, sustained high heating is to be avoided due to panel warping and poor sealing, has no flue baffle, makes excellent temporary heating for garage or barn, excellent inexpensive substitution for the vogelsgang excellent quality heat circulators of the past, light weight, easy to install at 250 pounds, works best with adjustable flue damper, may be the choice for bargain buyers shopping for wood burning stoves. Excellent parts availability.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Grate burned out in just a few months use. The grate burned out in just a few months.....from Feb. 2014 to Feb 2015...Here in Texas that was only about 5 months of usage. I burn wood, mainly oak and mesquite. I never expected to have to replace a grate, having grown up around coal stoves (some ancient even then) and I never knew of a grate burning out. Grates available from US Stove for $170. Pretty steep for a flat piece of cast iron lattice It is cast flat, in an open mold and would be expensive at $10. The fuel door tends to fall off, seems as it only happens when there is a large fire going. The pin at the hinge top MUST be replaced with a small bolt and nut. The baffle plate on the back of the ash door vent will have to be removed as ash build up behind the ash pan will prevent the ash door closing and will result in having to remove a hot coals filled ash pan and removing the ash at the back. Fill the air holes in the ash door with furnace cement to prevent sparks escaping, as they are not necessary. Use the thermostat door instead (wide open when starting a fire). It is necessary to buy a long handled ash shovel, as ashes must be removed from back and sides of the ash pit. An excellent one may be had from Tractor Supply for about $5. Now the pluses. It heats my 1100 sq foot home well, but wood must be added every 4 to 6 hours. I use a stove pipe thermometer to monitor the fire and the stove will maintain a constant heat setting at low to moderate heat for several hours. One huge plus is the fact that I can use 18 inch logs, 10 inches in diameter, which eliminates a lot of splitting and gives longer burn times. I found that the thermostat on the stove will control the amount of air and dampening necessary for a wood fire. But install a stovepipe damper, in case your fire gets out of control and too hot you will need to close all air inlets. Also in case of a flue fire closing the damper wil shut off air to the pipe. I found that trying to requlate the heat with the stove pipe damper will cause the stove to emit smoke into the house as the doors and thermostat doors are not air tight. I have been unable to find a non-adjustable elbow locally so I had to use an articulated adjustable one. They are not recommended by US Stove. But having to use one I found that they leak smoke badly. So if you can locate some furnace cement it can be worked into the joints to seal the elbow. Don't give up in a hardware store whenever they tell you they don't have it, that only means that the clerk has no idea what you are talking about. Usually the stocking employee will know where it is. Home Depot used to carry it, but no longer. A huge plus is that the unit is completely sealed and the firebox floor is recessed so that there is little danger of spilling burning logs and hot coals onto the floor, unlike the fire-place type where the firebox floor is at door level. This alone is enough reason to buy this unit. I buy Duraflame firelogs and cut them into fist sized chunks and then use some smaller wood or 2x4s for kindling which eliminates splitting kindling. I bought this coal/wood stove with the intention of using some coal, but I discovered the nearest place to buy coal is 500 miles away. So do your research first. The reason I recommend this stove is that the US Stove circulators are the best of a bad lot. It is not expensive at the $900 cost. When I bought this stove my natural gas bill was over $300 dollars for the month of Feb. 2014, to heat an 1100 sq ft house 24 hours a day. (In a major natural gas producing area, go figure) So the stove soon paid for itself. I have access to free wood for the cutting, so that is a tremendous help. The warranty on the firebox is 3 years, so we will see about the grate being covered under warranty. I hope this review helps future purchasers of this stove, considering the high cost of heating, in my situation this stove is a bargain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well made stove. It replaced the aging unit I had. Nice fire box, good construction. I wish the exterior door opened wider as the firebox door is a little tight for getting wood in. I actually found the same unit in a different store priced much cheaper after I had purchased this model

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wonderdeluxe stove The stove is advertised as wood/coal. On the inside of the door it says NO wood. This week was the first fire I had in the stove (Nov 23). I use wood only and did not really have any problems. My previous stove had a larger chamber. I notice that Home Depot now advertises an Ashley stove also. This one is probably larger chamber. The handle on my previous stove had a wood handle. This stove comes with a hook to open and close the door. It is awkward to use. I use a glove. It would be nice if Home Depot had a model in store so a person can get a hands on look at what they are getting.
