Which direction do you put the foil?

Car floorboard - I have a mid engine car and would like to keep heat out of the trunk. I've seen two opposing answers stating which direction to put the foil. Does it go next to the heat source or material next to the heat source?
Asked by: dgraves
The foil is the reflective part, so in a similar way that the foil reflects visible light, it also reflects infrared radiation, i.e. radiant heat. So the foil should face the heat source. An important caveat, however, is that the foil won't really be effective at reflecting radiant heat unless there's an air gap in front of it. If the foil lays flat against another surface (like say the floor of the trunk), the foil won't be helping. If you're lining the trunk interior then it would help to somehow "tent" it away from the adjoining surfaces wherever practical. Another caveat is that the foil must remain clean and shiny to be effective, which is a consideration if lining the exterior. Dirty foil doesn't reflect heat so well.

Can this be used on a classic car floor to keep the heat out?

Asked by: Justasking
No, you need a heavier product designed specifically for such applications in a car.

Will it help insulate the floor of a car?

I hear it is great in cars for noise reduction, but dose it help with heating or cooling retention. I've lived in the desert were the A/C on full blast at times is hard to feel. At the same time when I'm up North everything in my car is warm when the heat is on but my feet are still cold. Would this help with that?

Some, and also quieter too!

Can this be uses to cover a radiator? There is no control valve in and the place gets really overheated

I'm looking for a material I can sew to fit the size of the radiator, because even opening windows doesn't help
Asked by: Dina
My application of this material is specific for acoustics treatment in automobiles, it also works as an insulation/heat barrier when installed appropriately. While I don't think it will solve your issue entirely, it will in my opinion help.

It was used between Dynamat and 1lb Mass Loaded Vinyl on my Jeep for sound deadening. Now my ride is more quiet than the best luxury car. The material is easy to handle and use. I used scissors for cutting. The insulation is not itchy when touched. It lays nice on horizontal surfaces and spray adhesive works great overhead or on vertical surfaces. When I used this I made a pattern out of thick clear plastic sheeting that I used for the Dynamat, then for this Radiant Barrier, then for the Mass Loaded Vinyl. Normal pattern making w/ cutting darts permitted this to lay flat and tight against the irregularly shaped surfaces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for miscellaneous / unusual insulation needs While having new tile flooring installed in my house, we had to remove the dishwasher so they could tile under it. I noticed that the gray poly fiber insulation around my Whirlpool dishwasher was disintegrating. Simply touching it would cause it to fall apart and flake off as dust and fibers. We vacuumed all of it off, but we were then left with the bare plastic tub of the dishwasher, which was very loud and hot. I found this radiant barrier right away on the Home Depot web site, but because it is an online only product, I went to the store to try and find something I could use right away. I looked at water heater blankets, but the single one that was available in my store was fiberglass and looked like it would be a mess to cut and fit to my dishwasher. So I ordered two pieces of this radiant barrier, which arrived at my local store several days sooner than the HD web site estimated. Pickup at the store was a breeze as usual. This product is very neat stuff. The actual padding is like shredded denim or cloth fibers, so there is no mess or hassle of dealing with fiberglass. It's relatively thin, so easier to tuck into tighter spots than puffy insulation. It's very smooth, flat, and uniform, making it easy to form around corners and crevices. It is fairly tough stuff, so I ended up using EMT medic shears to cut it rather than scissors. It took some effort to cut, but the medic shears worked great and produced nice clean straight cuts. The reflective backing is a thin plastic material with fiber reinforcement, and it is well bonded to the fiber layer. The fiber material didn't separate at all, and it did not produce any mess or dust when cut, so there was zero mess to clean up. I covered my dishwasher with one full sheet of the barrier and figured out how I was going to cut it to fit. I made a few cuts with my shears, and the tailored barrier fit the dishwasher like a glove. I used a hot glue gun to attach the barrier to the dishwasher tub. The hot glue worked well, and held the barrier material in place perfectly. To cover a few long seams, I picked up a roll of the foil HVAC tape, just to keep that cool silver space age look. The foil tape worked great with the radiant barrier, sealing up the seams. I am not sure how the hot glue will hold up over time with the heat of the dishwasher, but I can check in a year or two and upgrade to a different glue if necessary. A single sheet completely covered the dishwasher, and I had a few small remnants left. I returned the second one that I bought back at my local store. This stuff is awesome. Based on the reviews, it seems like there are dozens of uses for it.

Bought this to insulate my dishwasher as it did not come with any when I purchased it. Dishwasher was loud and the counter above would heat up when in use. This product was extremely easy to use and I took a few tips from another review on this site. I cut one piece to wrap over the top and the sides and then one additional piece for the back. Material cut beautifully with kitchen shears and I sealed the pieces with HVAC foil tape and it worked perfectly. Washer is now quiet and my counter top does not heat up when the washer is in use. Total job cost less than $30 compared to $50 or more for buying a cheaply made version from the MFG.
