Which direction do you put the foil?

Car floorboard - I have a mid engine car and would like to keep heat out of the trunk. I've seen two opposing answers stating which direction to put the foil. Does it go next to the heat source or material next to the heat source?
Asked by: dgraves
The foil is the reflective part, so in a similar way that the foil reflects visible light, it also reflects infrared radiation, i.e. radiant heat. So the foil should face the heat source. An important caveat, however, is that the foil won't really be effective at reflecting radiant heat unless there's an air gap in front of it. If the foil lays flat against another surface (like say the floor of the trunk), the foil won't be helping. If you're lining the trunk interior then it would help to somehow "tent" it away from the adjoining surfaces wherever practical. Another caveat is that the foil must remain clean and shiny to be effective, which is a consideration if lining the exterior. Dirty foil doesn't reflect heat so well.

Can this be used on a classic car floor to keep the heat out?

Asked by: Justasking
No, you need a heavier product designed specifically for such applications in a car.

Will it help insulate the floor of a car?

I hear it is great in cars for noise reduction, but dose it help with heating or cooling retention. I've lived in the desert were the A/C on full blast at times is hard to feel. At the same time when I'm up North everything in my car is warm when the heat is on but my feet are still cold. Would this help with that?

Can this be uses to cover a radiator? There is no control valve in and the place gets really overheated

I'm looking for a material I can sew to fit the size of the radiator, because even opening windows doesn't help
Asked by: Dina
My application of this material is specific for acoustics treatment in automobiles, it also works as an insulation/heat barrier when installed appropriately. While I don't think it will solve your issue entirely, it will in my opinion help.

Very specific application for repelling heat signature from a freezer on a garage wall. Had power company energy audit which verified heat intrusion into home through the drywall from freezer unit located in garage. Ordered radiant blanket and installed, WORKS EXCELLENT. Attached barrier to drywall, moved freezer in place - hear signature virtually disappeared. GO BUY THIS PRODUCT.

I used it in a 1958 Corvette project car and it covers the whole floor. I am also going to use it inside the doors and trunk as sound and heat dampener.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Auto quieting Not it's designed use, but works rather well to help quiet road noise in my diesel truck. Original padding under the rubber mat up front had broken down after 15 years this was a great well priced replacement.

Bought this to insulate my dishwasher as it did not come with any when I purchased it. Dishwasher was loud and the counter above would heat up when in use. This product was extremely easy to use and I took a few tips from another review on this site. I cut one piece to wrap over the top and the sides and then one additional piece for the back. Material cut beautifully with kitchen shears and I sealed the pieces with HVAC foil tape and it worked perfectly. Washer is now quiet and my counter top does not heat up when the washer is in use. Total job cost less than $30 compared to $50 or more for buying a cheaply made version from the MFG.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed This was not a conventional use for the product by any means. I used it to replace the 50 year old cab roof insulation in a 1967 El Camino that I had completely disassembled. At 1/4 the cost of automotive solutions it was a no brainer for me. Product was easily trimmed with scissors and glued foil side up for a nice flat installation. I suspect it will outlast me.

It was used between Dynamat and 1lb Mass Loaded Vinyl on my Jeep for sound deadening. Now my ride is more quiet than the best luxury car. The material is easy to handle and use. I used scissors for cutting. The insulation is not itchy when touched. It lays nice on horizontal surfaces and spray adhesive works great overhead or on vertical surfaces. When I used this I made a pattern out of thick clear plastic sheeting that I used for the Dynamat, then for this Radiant Barrier, then for the Mass Loaded Vinyl. Normal pattern making w/ cutting darts permitted this to lay flat and tight against the irregularly shaped surfaces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from radiant barrier Radiant barrier is used in lining our duct work that we custom build. Not only does it reduce noise, but is an excellent insulation factor. It's also made from recycled cotton denim material and is safe to use. Most duct work if insulation is done had fiberglass products lining it, which is a known carcigen (cancer). We prefer to give our customers the best and safest product in their homes. Home Depot has great delivery and pricing on radiant barrier.
