Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 80 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by We really like the Durostar Eco-Shredder Model ES1600 As other reviewers have mentioned the assembly manual was not very helpful It said nothing about assembling the "axles" to the frame. But, there were not that many parts so anyone with any mechanical smarts should be able to assemble it without a manual. If you clog up the top hopper the manual says to unscrew three knobs to remove the hopper. Actually, you need to unscrew five knobs and remove the handle to remove the hopper. We ran it for about 5 hours to reduce a big pile of raspberry and grape vines, sunflower stalks plus a few hardwood branches into a much smaller pile of mulch. The machine only stalled once when I was feeding an inch thick hardwood branch into the side chute. It never jammed or clogged even when I was feeding multiple vines in the side chute and my wife was feeding leaves and twigs in the top hopper at the same time. All the material we were putting in was Thoroughly DRY. We had to frequently rake away the mulch from under the machine before it built up enough to cover the vents on the motor. After running it for 5 hours some of the screws had become loose and one had fallen out, which I later found in the mulch (but not the washers). I would suggest checking it every hour for loose screws. When I later took it apart to clean I found a large crack on the inside of the side chute, probably a broken weld. (Picture 2) It doesn't look like it will impact the operation unless I try to feed one-inch hardwood branches again. But I may want to get it welded sometime. I have not tried warranty service because I would probably have to pay to ship the heavy steel hopper back to the repair center. The only other complaint I have is that the short power cord is just long enough to get tangled under the wheels when I pull it, so I used some cable ties to tie it up to the frame. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chips and shreds all day long As noted in earlier reviews, the assembly booklet leaves something to be desired. Notwithstanding that, this product was easy to assemble. You put the wheels on, the handle and the hopper, and that is it. The all steel construction is a plus as is the heavy duty vinyl hopper. The electric motor is very powerful. It chips wood into tiny bits and shreds leaves into very small pieces. It took a bit of experimenting to do the chipping and shredding without causing a jam. Once you get a good rhythm going, the jams are few and far between. For example, the machine does not like acorns. But, the ease of taking the hopper off, and the tool to manually turn the blades, made quick work of any jam. So far I've shredded tree branches; leaves; milkweed stalks; various flower stalks; and garden debris. I use a five gallon bucket to catch the chipped/shredded material. This machine is just fine for a quarter acre suburban yard with trees, flowers and bushes, and a vegetable garden. This would be a very worthwhile purchase for anyone who wants to create their own mulch. October 28, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worthless If you have only one bush to trim, you might like this product. The feeder is extremely small requiring that everything be cut into small pieces before shredding and has to be fed one piece at a time. Nothing will go through without pushing it down with the supplied tool. Trimmings have to be fed through stem first one at a time. Fresh green material will clog it up requiring the removal of the handle and hopper to clean it out. I trimmed 12 rose bushes and it took two hours to run everything through and had to clean it out four times. It does seem to have plenty of power and shreds into small pieces. If I had had a chance to use it before I bought it, I would not have wasted my money. I will not waste my time trying to use it again. If I can't sell it, I will haul it to the dump and chalk the lost money up to stupidity. April 13, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This chipper allows us to transform yard "waste" into nutrient rich mulch. I have been composting for years, but shrub and tree branches don't break down fast enough. This chipper does the trick. Now none of our yard "waste" goes anywhere but is recycled back into my gardens. We love it. I could use one even more powerful, for larger branches, but I like the compact size. It is easy to move and store. Part of the directions is faulty. Do not cover the out chute with a plastic bag. That causes the motor to shut down. We catch the shredded material in an open cardboard box and then I can easily spread it on my flower/vegetable beds. February 21, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed The assembly instructions are imprecise, incomplete, and printed with text and graphics that are too vague and too small. I am disappointed in the low volume handling capability of this shredder and the lack of a convenient method to collect the shredded materiel as it exits the machine. Shredding a large trash bag of dry leaves took nearly an hour. I attribute the low throughput of this shredder, in large part, to the small, narrow feeding port. If you have a large yard with many trees and lots of leaves, you may be better served with a larger capacity shredder. April 29, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by really gets rid of yard clutter wood chippers are pretty pricey so was glad to find one under $250. made a quick job out of mulching my overgrown lilac bush. blade got stuck once cutting one of the larger branches but it's built well enough to be able to undo 3 bolts and take the top of the unit off to get to the blade for clearing or replacing when needed. much better built than one I had previously, this one has plastic parts too but the main case is metal with metal bolts. won't do 2" diameter branches but pretty good value for what it can do. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Capacity too small for input, chipping, and shredding Limited input capacity. Jammed frequently. Connectors for assembly not good. Extra washers caused confusion; poor assembly instructions. April 4, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed with quality Disappointed in the quality. I've already had to replaced the blades after one use. The blades if they aren't put in just right, they scrape the side of the discharge chute. Also, the screws that hold the blades aren't the best quality. They are almost stripped already and I only used the tools I was given with the product. I had to loosen the screws on the bottom to move the cover over so I could access the hex screw to free up a jam. February 3, 2015
