Customer Questions & Answers

Does this door have a lock?

Does the included door handle/latch include a locking mechanism? thanks, andy
Asked by: Andy
It has a latch so you can secure it from the inside. Not a lock and key. Additionally, the door is so flimsy that it wouldn't slow a burglar down 10 seconds so security should not be a consideration.

Can we install the door the other way?

We have a door that opens inside with the knob on the right facing the door from outside. We want to install this door so that it would open outward to the left. That would make both doors opening the opposite ways; screen opens to the right and door opens to the left.
Asked by: Glenda
This door is reversible.

I would like to have this installed if I purchase it

Asked by: Gina
If you are paying someone to install it I say install a security mesh door. It does the same thing plus it is more secure, cost about the same, and will last forever and can be painted when it gets old.

Called Customer Service and after being on hold for 10 min., Tina told me that Unique HD does not have any replacement parts for this model. Honestly, the entire experience with this door was nothing but misery and a time suck. The instructions are confusing. Screws were mislabeled (saw that it was corrected on digital version, but not on printed version that came with door (re: #10x1" screw). Missing pieces (no spring included in door handle assembly, making latch useles). Screws not fitting properly. Each and every step of the installation process was a pain. Then on the Unique Home Designs website, not a single contact email, customer service phone number... nothing. Had to post a question on Home Depot to get a customer service number. Overall cheap product. Poor technical writing in manual/instructions. Bad Customer Service. Horrible. Will never buy from this company again.

This entry door and any other ones made by Unique Home Designs are terrible. DO NOT BUY ANY OF THEM!! I have tried one, thought it was a bad model, so went and bought another style by Unique Home Design and exactly the same terrible quality. These doors are just incredibly cheap quality and difficult to install, won't fit your door's opening (the measurements written on its package are not true to size!). The directions are difficult to follow and the instruction video is not all that great. Even the hardware pack, simple screws and bolts are so cheap that they strip pretty much the moment you pit the screwdriver to them! A screw must cost what, a penny or two? Also, the door slams right behind you as you enter into the house instead of gently closing. Very unhappy and if I hadn't already spent 6 hours trying to get this door to fit my house and install it on there, I would be returning it to Home Depot for my refund, for the second time!

I was about to install it but realized it was not built all that well. These doors are usually where there is a lot of traffic so I was surprised how it was built. I returned it. I think it is better to get models that have more studs or metal mess coverage at the bottom.

Honestly, the door itself is not that bad and was fine for the particular application I wanted, however, installation was a near disaster. I was able to salvage the door only because esthetics are not a consideration. It was lightly dented during the install process but it didn't matter to me that much, ne'er the less, it is flimsy. Instructions for installation are not that great and it took several tries to fit the door latch strike plate. The door latch mechanism itself is cheap and difficult to install. The pneumatic door closer sort of works but will not close the door completely and it must be assisted shut the last 3-4 inches. I have adjusted the closer per the directions to no avail. The only thing I wanted was a convenient screen door for the rear walk-in door to my garage so I could have ventilation and not worry about our pets wandering through the garage to harm should I walk away for a few minutes. It does that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do it! I should have believed the other negative reviews, This was a piece of garbage. The only reason I didn't return it is that I live over two hours from the nearest home depot. In all honesty it might have been OK if I hadn't had to change the way it swung for my application. Mind you it is supposed to be able to do this easily...not. The inserts in the door spin freely making it impossible to tighten the hinge channel . To make it worse there is a lock nut between the hinge channel and the free spinning insert. After a couple of hours of trying everything I could think of I took the lock nuts off and threw them away substituting a 3/8 wooden dowl to keep the expander from collapsing too far, and holding it at the right distance..... Finally got that solved. The next challenge was cutting the channel expander and the hinge channel . The methodology in the directions said to use a hack saw or tin snips. Ever try cutting aluminum channel like this and having it look good? This is a screen door and by definition it shows. I won't go into missing screws or directions that tell you what size hole to drill that works out to be just large enough that the spring that releases the latch drops into the hole and won't allow the handle to work properly.... Solved that one with a washer. But all in all for about 5 hours work, I should have returned the door. I will pay closer attention to product reviews at this site from now on. You should too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible design Nothing easy about this. 'EZ' U-channel design is flimsy at best. Plus trying to get the screen into the u-channel was like hearding cats. Screen is extremely flimsy when installed. Waste of money. Dont buy.
