how do I change the opening force?

Asked by: merlin
The unit has to socket head screws one adjusts the latch speed (about the last six inches of swinging to close position) the other is for the remainder of the swinging close sequence, make small turns and keep cycling the closing swing and you will get the hang of the sdjustments

Easy install but you have to make sure that the arm attached to the wall/door frame (in a right handed open inward install) is perpendicular to the wall/door frame with door shut completely. After installing I couldn't open the door, then I reread the instructions which indicated that the arm needed to be perpendicular to the wall/door frame. I got a carpenters square to make sure it was installed correctly and walla it worked just fine; its a little stiff to open but I'm hoping it will loosen up a bit after time. It appears that being perpendicular is critical because the opener and the arm are so close together. After you install the opener on the door and the arm on the wall/door frame, you have to adjust the length of the arm to make sure it's perpendicular.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from adjustable closing speed works great, attractive looking door closer I love this closer because wirh extending the link arm and making the adjustment perpendicular it slows down the door

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needed to adjust placement of top bracket to get door to open I followed the instructions and used the supplied template to install this closer in a "left-hand inward open" configuration. I was not able to open the door using the exact placement of the screws as provided in the template. After several hours of trial and error I discovered that I needed to move the "link arm show" further to the left (further away from the door hinge) to get the door to open and have the door closer function. In my opinion, the supplied template had the link and link arm shoe too close to the door hinge which did not permit the door to open. Other than that, the product works as advertised and I do recommend using this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dont use the template for the arm Just like the guy commented here "Needed to adjust placement of top bracket to get door to open", I used it in an inward-right installation and the arm is suggested to be mounted too close to the closer. Shift the arm slightly (2-3") right (righ-inward) or left (left-inward) from the original template to EASE INITAL RESISTANCE (it's not adjustable) when opening.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Instructions are bad, closer is good I have 4 of these. The first one I installed did not work right. It took me a while to discover why. There is an optical illusion in the instructions. If you do not look at it correctly, you end up using the wrong template. You can make it work, but it will not work correctly. Use a pencil to shade in the door jamb to help you see the diagram correctly. Once installed correctly, they work quite well. The template makes it easy, but you have to look at it the right way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not as heavy duty as it sounds Purchased this for a solid core garage door. This door closer did not have enough juice to close it. Ended up buying a commercial quality one instead.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Door slammer Don't buy this piece of garbage. I wasted all kinds of time installing it and trying to adjust it, but it simply doesn't work. One screw cannot be expected to adjust for both speed and softness. It is impossible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Started leaking oil after only 5 months The closer closed the door to the garage a couple of times a day until it started leaking oil all over the door. It failed inside of 6 months. Wasted money.
