Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be mounted on 'hinge side' (not on the 'swing side') of the door?

On the attached spec sheet, see "parallel arm application" for my preferred mounting configuration. OK with the above product?
Asked by: JD
It can be mounted on either side of the door. Use "parallel arm" for the push side, use "top jamb" for the push side, and only if the widows take up so much space on the top of the door that parallel is not possible. Use "standard" or "regular arm" mounting for the pull side of the door.

What is the spacing on the mounting bolts?

Asked by: GS
The mounting bolts are 1 3/4'' apart.

Is there a way to making opening the screen door easier.

I had this installed to allow my new steel screen door to automatically close. The closure of the door is great. But opening the door is very difficult. It is very heavy and I don't know how to release some of the pressure.
Asked by: Sandie
Sandie-Our UH4052 Door Closer has a factory set spring tension of 3. It is not adjustable. However, if you used the Top Jamb or the Regular Arm Installation, you can make the initial opening a little easier by removing the adjustable arm from the center hole in the foot (bracket) and relocating the arm into the hole farthest away from the hinge side of the door. If you need additional assistance, we'd be happy to help. We can be reached at www.Hampton.Care.

Heavy door I need to close slowly. Will this work?

Asked by: Ethan
Ethan, I just installed this on my solid core door leading to my garage which is quite heavy and it worked well. The ratings for this unit are for doors up to 140 lbs and a closing speed of 6 seconds at the slowest setting, from 90 degrees. Hope that answers your questions...

Customer Reviews

Medium-Duty Commercial Door Closer in Bronze is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Product Got this for my garage-to-house door. Wanted one to mount inside the garage and swing wide. This does the job. Pros: - Heavy duty. Feels like it will last a long time. - Accurate adjustments for swing speed and latch speed. Easy to adjust. - Versatile mounting hardware for wood or metal frames, and interior or exterior (my application) use. - Smooth action - Lifetime warranty on exterior package, but nothing inside except phone number and email address. Cons: - Plastic packaging is super heavy duty. Had to use a razor knife and it was very hard to cut. Dangerous. - Very poor instructions. I kept looking for another sheet. No chart of included parts or which parts are used for the various installations. But the measurements for screw placement were accurate and made sense after a few read-throughs. Pictures were okay, but not great. Could have really used an intro "Overview" section on how the product can be used (should be on exterior of packaging, too). - Paint flaked off my "bronze" unit even through careful handling. But I think it will be fine now that it's up on the door. - Model number was referenced on instructions (which applied to more than one model) and here at, but model number is in tiny gray text on package--hard to find. - Made in China.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I install the door closer 6 weeks ago and perfect I like the price, the look, the way I can set the door, I'm really happy, now the door wait for you to get inside of the store. The old door closer was really bad and was liking all the time, and the stone under the door closer look bad and was danger for the people. I hope the quality of this product is better, at lease look like is to much better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Closer, but... I installed this closer on the door between the garage and the house. Pretty easy to install. Works great. After 6 months of use, however it started to leak oil. Thanks to Home Depot's top-notch returns policy, I was able to trade the defective unit in for a replacement. If it fails this time, I guess it's shame on me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, poor instruction manual I bought this product a couple of days ago from Home Depot. The product was packaged efficiently. The instruction manual was the worst. I was expecting an IKEA type manual - very detailed explaining each and every part including screws. The instruction manual was the worst - a 1 page manual that encompasses all types of possible installation. It took me a few readings to figure out what is what, and what piece goes where. Product looks decent, however, for someone not very familiar with the terms (pinions, jambs, latch speed etc), it took a long time to figure out what is what. The manual writers need to look at IKEA manual or some detailed manual that spells out each and every step.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Commercial Door Closer Holes lined up with old unit and works as good as the one originally installed by a professional contractor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great on my garage entry door I just installed this on the solid core door leading from my house to the garage to eliminate the constant slamming caused by those (code required) spring loaded hinges. It worked very well. I 'unwound' the two spring hinges (using a suitable allen wrench inserted into the top of the hinge, slightly increase tension, pull the small locking pin, then carefully unwind the internal spring until tension is fully released). Once those were loose I set the closing and latching speed on the new closer. I had to slightly modify the instructions and mount the forearm foot about 3/4 of an inch higher than specified, because I needed the screws to hit the 2X4 header behind the upper trim moulding. Following the instructions exactly (regular arm installation) would result in the screws entering the cavity above the door frame and below the header, meaning only the trim moulding would be supporting the arm. That would soon fail. The forearm unit pivots at both ends, though, so no problem doing that. Took roughly 30 minutes and no more slamming door...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works nicely Our church's doors are 82"X30" solid core slabs that are quite heavy (I'm guessing about 90 lbs.). We installed two of these closers in no time it seemed. The only thing I can offer is that these closers are pretty stiff and will probably need a fair amount of use to loosen up a bit. We did call the manufacturer about a small issue and got excellent customer service from their staff.
