It is unclear if this model has a battery backup or not. The use and care manual seems generic so I cant tell if the description about replacing the backup battery applies to this model or not. Anyone know about the backup battery?

Answer:
Yes, this device has a battery backup.
If the battery is not installed, and the device is connected to mains electricity (as it should be), it will chirp every 30-45 seconds forever.

Answer:
Yes, the USI MDS107 can communicate with up to 12 smoke alarms and 6 other devices (e.g Heat Detectors, Carbon Monoxide detectors).
NOTE that it can only communicate with USI (Universal Security Instruments) devices; connecting it to other manufacturers devices probably won't work.

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible units Multiple false alarms Terrible units Multiple false alarms have to bring back units out of the 5 I bought . Other reviews on other units say get same experiences. Would not recommend June 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not as advertised I was looking for a 120V smoke alarm for my vacation home WITHOUT a battery backup. When the vacation home is not occupied, I turn off the breaker to the smoke alarm and other unused circuits. I didn't want a battery to run down and beep when the power is off. There is no mention in the description that this smoke alarm has a battery back-up, but it does. If I had not had a huge hassle purchasing it from HD to start with, I would have returned it. Also, the so-called "universal" interconnect wiring harness on this smoke alarm is not so universal. The plug from the smoke alarm I was replacing would not snap securely into this smoke alarm, so I had to pull the wiring apart and use the wiring harness that came with this smoke alarm. Furthermore, the way the mount is made, it is almost impossible to get this alarm to latch onto the included model-specific ceiling mount provided. Finally, the battery back-up I didn't want to start with is another manufacturing/design defect. I removed the battery to get a clearer view of the ceiling mount to try to mount the alarm. When I went to replace the battery, there is a catch to prevent the battery compartment being put back in place without a battery. Even with the battery in place, it would not let the battery compartment slide back in place. I had to insert a thin object to push the catch out of the way in order to re-insert the battery compartment. All in all a big disappointment and too much trouble to be worthwhile. Save your time, aggravation and money and buy a different brand from someone other than Home Depot. January 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Smoke Alarm This is a good smoke alarm for the price. Easy to install; I didn't hard-wire mine. I like the fact that you can easily change the battery w/o having to take the unit apart. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, long shipping time. This was a replacement piece in my already wired system, so it was super easy to install. Almost a week long shipping time seems a little ridiculous for such a small item though. June 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Smoke Alarm on the Planet Best smoke alarm on the planet. I have had clients put these in a number of houses that were getting false alarms all the time. Now they have none. In houses where alarms had been ripped out of the ceilings because of false alarms, now the alarms stay put, changing an unprotected house into a safe one. In my own house we had problems every week: humid days, neighbor firing up his wood boiler, dinner being ready, etc. Now we have no problems at all. Plus, I don't have to run around the house looking for a flashing light that tells me which unit is causing the alarm. A push of the button, on ANY alarm will cause only the offending alarm to beep, making it easy to find. This detector also solves the problem of alarms that are out of reach, as I can silence that alarm from one that is mounted at a more convenient height. Their website says this alarm, according to a university study, is the fastest responding alarm out there to detect fast flaming fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. It responds 87% faster (than required?) for slow smoldering fires, which you would get an ionization alarm for. Better than both kinds, and the "Microprocessor Intelligence" might be just a cool way to market it, but it really did eliminate all the false alarms in my home, and my clients' homes.
