Installed six model 5204 about 2 years ago (mfg date Apr 2013). Now they're going off at all times of the day, especially notable at 3 am. Tried fresh batteries, cleaning them, to no avail. Trying to find out which one starts the chorus, no easy task. Probably will end up replacing the whole lot, but it will not be USI's pieces of junk.

Never knew that when you replaced your hard wired home smoke detectors, you had to stay with the same manufacturer.... "They talk to one another".....USI is what we had in the house. Replacing our problem detectors solved all our "middle of the night alarms". Because it was the same manufacturer it was simple to install.
We had purchased the wrong manufacturer previously and when we went to our local Home Depot....the woman at the front desk could not have been more helpful, returning what we had purchased and finding what I needed online.
All in all a very positive experience ....after I learned about using the same manufacturer.

Replaced all four 8 year old smoke detectors that were used by a heavy smoker resident. Have been installed for about 6 months now and are working just fine.

Bought six model 5204 smoke alarms 4 years ago. We've had many false alarms in the middle of the night. Last night at 3am the detector on the 19 foot ceiling of my great room malfunctioned waking everybody in the house. By the time I was able to bring in and set up a ladder to remove it we were all wide awake. The unit had a fresh battery installed last week. Now three of the six units I bought have been removed so our protection has been significantly diminished. To replace six smoke alarms is no small investment in time or money. Do your homework and be sure to buy the best you can find. Sometimes it only costs twice as much to buy the best. A small price for a good nights sleep.

These were what the house had origionally, so unless we wanted to rewire things completely this was our only option. They are inexpensive, and don't seem as strong as other models. They only lasted 6 years and then started chirping all the time even with new batteries. But if they work in a fire (heaven forbid) they are still worth it just need to realize you'll replace them more often than they state.
