My old smoke detectors were 10 years old and needed replacement. Why chance it will dusty older technology and/or components. Bought 6 hard wired USI and put them in myself. Yes, in case you are wondering, you need to replace the ceiling ring with the new one so the detector property mounts on the ceiling. I replaced each old one as I went along with new. Assuming your wiring used plastic electrical nuts, I just carefully undid one nut at a time and replaced each wire to it's corresponding position. With 101 straight forward electric wiring procedures, connect black wire to black and white wire to white. The other wire attached to detector may be or not the same color as the hard wired wire that interconnects them together. The yellow wire on my new smoke alarm connected to a red wire that interconnect them all. Test each new smoke alarm to insure all the alarms sound together. Good luck and hope you never need them..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always there, always alert. When I had our house built recently, the design included a strobe light fire alarm system in order to better protect my deaf son. Unfortunately, the three initial alarm units developed problems with false alarms and/or no response at all when tested.. I replaced them with 3 USI Electric brand smoke & fire alarms. When the test button is pushed, all three USI alarms react reliably and consistently by sounding not only a loud alarm but also by triggering the strobe lights. Otherwise, they simply hand around on the wall letting us know with their little green power light that they are always there and always alert. What more could I ask for?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from One Defective Had to replace all detectors (5)...found same brand online at HD. About a week after having new detectors installed, one went off, setting off other four. Thinking maybe wiring problem, hired electrician - determined one of new detectors was defective...ordered two more from HD (one as extra in case another problem)...electrician came back to install. So far, so good. Stuck with this brand because I wanted to make sure compatible with my monitored system. I said "yes" on recommendation because this may have just been a fluke - but was a very annoying one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice replacement Better price at Home Depot than most places. Bought as a replacement for a system with inter-tied units. Works great, plugged in and mounts in place of older unit that would not stop intermittent beeping (tried replacing battery multiple times, clean/blowing out to no avail).
