Minimum Depth

This question is from 10 in. Sun Tunnel Tubular Skylight with Rigid Tunnel and Low Profile Flashing

Where the vaulted ceilings angle downward near the walls, the angle follows right against the roof which is only separated by a 2x6. So adding in the roof plywood and ceiling sheetrock, the depth is probably not over 6 1/2 inches.

Wondering two things. 1) Could one cut down the tubing or leave it out altogether and still make this fit correctly and 2) without the reflective tube, would the light delivered into the interior, still be about the same? Meaning does the tube add something that you wouldn't get without the tube?

Answer:
No, since we do not have a metal roof flashing kit available for this unit, we do not recommend installing it on a metal roof application. Your best Sun Tunnel option for a metal roof is the TCR SunTunnel. It installs on a site built curb. It comes with curb flashing, but you must make your own material for the metal roofing around the curb. Thank you.

Answer:
Yes, you can install the VELUX Sun Tunnel in a cathedral ceiling, however, you must have a minimum of 12 inches from the roof deck to the ceiling for the rigid tubing. Thank you.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bright light, quality parts, easy install My dad and I installed one in our kitchen; it took about 3 hours and required some modifications from the manual (we have a flat roof with less than 14" between the ceiling and the external roof). Even accounting for that, it was a very easy install and the resulting illumination is great. It puts out about twice as much light compared to the traditional skylights we have elsewhere in our house, thanks to the reflective coating inside the tube (It was too bright to look at until we put the diffuser plate on) Significantly less expensive than the SolarTube brand we were considering. We no longer need to turn the lights on in the kitchen during the daytime. Great value, no complaints. May 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great source of natural light These sun tunnels are amazing. We had 5 installed in our older home that doesn't have enough natural light. We had one each in the master bath, hallway, and stairway, and 2 in the living room. We had them installed with our new roof. It took the roofers several hours to install each light, although they got faster as they went along. The amount of light they let in, even on a cloudy day, is wonderful. One tip is to check the effective length of the product rather than just looking at the tunnel length, as there is some overlap to consider during installation. I'm not sure if the potential energy savings will be cost-effective in the short term as we are already energy-conscious, but they certainly lift our spirits and make the house look so much better. Even the low profile version that we have is fairly large and obvious on the roof line, but that is not a concern for us. The inside mount is also large, but not obtrusive. The light is on the blue end of the spectrum, so don't expect golden light. Overall I love them and wish I could have more installed. June 18, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Terrific product and wonderful addition to our new kitchen My wife and I just completely remodeled our kitchen. We had a 14' Velux Sun Tunnel installed and it is absolutley amazing. You can't imagine how much light this product provides. It completely engulfs the majority of the kitchen in a warm, natural light. We have gotten amazing comments from all who have seen it, and if we hadn't just gone without a kitchen for 9 weeks, I would install two more of these in the house. Highly recommend! June 12, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, horrible packaging! Although the product seems to be easy to install (packaging says 2 to 3 hours) just try doing installing it in new construction. Also, the boxes came pretty crushed. All it would take is a bit better packaging on Velux's part, and I wouldn't have had to order 6 additional sets (I put in a total of 10) to finish out my project. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Installation instructions left alot to be desired Overall it's not a bad product. The installation instructions were pretty vague. ie:"Determine the overall length of the straight tunnel section. Include minimum 3" to overlap the elbows and minimum 11/2" for each additional straight tunnel section." It doesn't really tell you how this measurement comes into play. I spent more time trying to figure out the instructions than doing the install. The straight sections of tube are taped together, I had to use sheet metal screws to hold it together. October 24, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The sun tunnel I'll continue to get. I encourage energy efficiency, the VELUX SUN TUNNEL meets those expectations. Their installation isn't trivial, but not difficult or involved either. Their design is flexible enough to fit most situations. January 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by gives great light Took less then 1 1/2 hour to install if you read the simple instructions> More light with no heat November 8, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Let in a lot of light Don't look too big on the roof & let in a lot of light. August 16, 2012
