Product Overview

The new solar powered Fresh Air skylight lights up your home and provides proper ventilation using only the power of the sun. It features a solar panel that captures any available daylight and uses it to recharge a highly efficient battery powered operator and control system. The solar panel does not have to be exposed to direct sunlight to function, so it will work on cloudy days and with indirect light.

Open past the venting position

If the powered actuator arm is disconnected, can the skylight be manually opened past the venting position to allow a person to climb through? Does the hinge open that far?
Asked by: JB
Thank you for the replies! The roof is fairly flat So I am not worried about it sliding off. I think 45 degrees is enough to get through if needed. Just curious, is there terminology for an "accessible skylight" that is designed to allow someone to climb through. I think this product will work for me

Does "curb mounted" mean a curb must be built on-site to accommodate the skylight, or is the "curb" already part of the skylight?

does the remote need to be hard wired?
Asked by: Bailey
nope. it works on batteries via bluetooth. but, in my case they needed to be reset a few times a year. it is a bit of an onerous process as it requires getting to the skylight (interior), removing the screen, poking a hole with a paperclip, and then reprogramming the remote with the "new" product and remove the "old" product.

Is is possible to make a VCM solar-powered?

I have a 4646 VCM skylight, and I was wondering if it would be possible to retro-fit a solar panel to the existing skylight. Any thoughts? Also, what is the long term hassle with the VCS, such as the life expectancy of the battery unit? I'm considering getting another VCM just to avoid the eventual wear-out of the solar components.
Asked by: addienarms
We do not carry a "retro-fit" kit to convert your skylights to the solar panel model. The Solar powered skylights offer a 30% Federal Tax credit program for materials and installation costs on those type units. The skylights carry a 10 year No Leak Warranty. The Solar Panel, and drive motor/ battery assembly have a 5 year warranty. We fully expect these systems to operate 10-12 years before any parts need replacing.

I removed the existing Velux skylight and placed the Solar Powered one. Fit perfectly and works great. With the tax break and functionality, it is a great purchase.

I purchased six of these last summer. they are pretty easy to set up and I thought they would be great. the rain sensor was cool - they shut automagically when it started raining. really nice. fast forward to not quite one year later. I have had to "reset" the skylights several times through the year to keep them working. this entails getting a ladder, removing the screen, poking a hole with a paper clip and reprogramming the remote - removing the old entry for that skylight and adding the new one. for each of six skylights. Frustrating, but at least they were working. Now, one of them won't reset. I looked online, but there is no info about what do to if it doesn't reset. In fact, on the Velux website, this model of skylight is not even listed in their troubleshooting section. I tried sending them a request on their customer support form several times, but I only get the message back: "We experienced a technical difficulty while processing your request. Your data may not have been correctly saved." Extremely frustrating and no path forward that I see. I would not recommend these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from superb design and construction These newest skylights from Velux are amazing: they can be operated without an electrical supply, instead being powered from their own solar panels. A built-in rain sensor will close the window automatically. The quality of the construction and design is first rate, and they are easy to install (caveat: well built in this case means heavy). The remote is easy to program and can control many skylights with tons of options. One worry, which I hope isn't a problem in the long run: there's an internal battery charged from the solar panel, but I don't see any way to replace it if it goes bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought I made a mistake, but.... Thought I made a mistake, but....We love the solar powered skylight!!!!! I had buyers remorse at first, but after was installed, and we started using it, couldn't be more happy. It lets so much air threw, I cant believe it myself. Plus the quality is there! You wont regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW this skylight is amazing I have 4 of the older ones that are hard wired and was a little apprehensive ordering this one but was certainly impressed. It's been installeda couple months now and it's spectacular. The operation in smooth and quiet, the controller is easy and impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well made product---so far I rated the 'installation' as "excellent" based only on the unit itself. For a DIY homeowner, if the opening for the skylight has yet to be cut and/or the 'curb' has not been built onto which the skylight is mounted, then this becomes a much more involved, and complicated project. That being said, Velux has made a very good product which looks very weather proof. Because it is a solar system there is no wiring to run, and the solar panel mounts very easily with only two screws and a simple snap electrical connector. The remote, touchsreen, control module is very easy to operate and the rain sensor worked flawlessly. Because I have only had the unit installed for about 2 weeks, I have no way to rate the quality beyond that time frame.
