We have used this on our floors. Its been seven years and it needs another coat. What do I need to do to prep the floors

Asked by: Jan
Just clean them well and lightly sand any worn or rough spots. I never sand the whole floor

Do you have to get to bare wood or can it be applied with a roughed but coated floor?

Asked by: Les
Depends on what is on your floor now and how old it is. I just refinished my 60+ year oak floors with this. Have to figure that 60 years ago they didn't have polyurethane, so my floors most likely had oil based shellac on them. I was refinishing the hallway and 2 bedrooms, and wanted that to match the rest of the floors. Hallway and both bedrooms completely went to bare wood, but at the end of the hallway I went over about 4 sq ft of the living room old finish at entrance to kitchen (was worn/scuffed looking). I lightly sanded that area, applied some Minwax to the lighter and worn thru areas, then wiped it dry. After staining the bare wood, I put 4 coats of urethane over both areas. After the 1st coat dried I put some tape on the old finished area and tried see if any or the new urethane would pull of of the old finish when I pulled up the tape. It didn't, so I applied the other coats. Looks great. As long as your old finish is very dry (talking about years here, not days), you should be able to clean it thoroughly (used TSP), rinse it several times, scuff sand, and apply. If concerned try it the corner of a closet first. Try the tape test if extra concerned.

Coverage amount

It says that it covers 400 sq ft. Is that for just a single coat application? Or is that the coverage for the recommended minimum of 3 coats?
Asked by: Alex
I got 4 coats over 350 sq ft of flooring with one gallon. I poured it on the floor then spread with a paint pad. I might have some areas that were a little heavier than others, but I was real close to their 400 sq ft.

Can you put this over an oil based stain?

Asked by: Gary
I used this over both minwax (doors) and the Varathane (floors) oil stains. I let each stain dry fully overnight. I had no problems with either. In a few areas I had to put a thinned coat of the stain on top of 2 coats of urethane to try to blend the coloring better. Again, I let it dry overnight. No problems with more coats of urethane over the dry oil stain.

I used this product on refinishing oak parquet tile floors applied with a synthetic no-fuzz roller with 1/4" nap. The coverage was about double what the can said, so that was a plus! We applied 4 coats, as recommended. We waited 2 hours between coats. After the third coat it took longer to dry. We left it overnight and returned to a dry, clear third coat. Fourth went on just as others. We stained the wood before poly and did not need to sand again - it's a slick finish and almost no odor. You could not smell it at all in the hallway beyond the closed door. Cannot say anything about wear yet.

It was a twelve year old water based finish. I sanded the floor in a couple of hours with an Dual Action sander. I blended the edges at the door openings. I sanded the edges but not down to the wood. ( blended This finish made the floor like new again and did not leave a line in the door ways or at the baseboards. The finish looks the same over the whole floor I could not be happier and the project was easy. I should have done it years ago.

This product is easy to apply with a deck pad on a broom handle and it looks great when it dries. "No Odor" is a bit optimistic but the smell is tolerable even when applied in the winter with the house closed up. I can't comment on the wear resistance yet because it's too soon, but I do intend to order more of this for other rooms I need to do. This product definitely dries crystal clear - no amber color like oil based poly.

Very low odor and it did dry quickly--so quickly, that it did not penetrate much at all on a test board I used it on before floor application. If yoiu use this, be sure to pre-seal with a penetrating sanding sealer. Zinsser 100% dewaxed shellac worked well(named "Universal Sanding Saeler"

Product is exceptionally easy to apply, whether by brush or applicator pad. Just be sure to keep a "wet edge" or laps can show. Use sufficient amount to allow it to "level" any streaks.
