Can this be used overtop something like Thompson's Water Seal or Sikkens Proluxe to add extra waterproofing?

The question really says it all: I have a railing I'm building and have already treated them with a weatherproofing stain, but am looking for a bit more protection since I'm in an area that sees wet, humid summers and snowy winters. Is this (or a product like it, the Q&A in one of the Shellac products sent me to this one) something I can put overtop, or will the undercoat prove too hydrophobic for it? In the years I worked as a carpenter, finishes was never a department I was in, and it's coming back to bite me now.

Answer:
Varathane Water-Based Exterior Spar Urethane is suitable for use on previous coatings that are in sound condition. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of wax, grease, oil, shellac, lacquer, mildew and polish prior to application. Make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions for the stain if it can be top coated and what limitations there may be.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Water based sealer The best water based sealer you can used inside or outside. October 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easiest Urethane Needed to protect screen enclosed patio ceiling and did not want to deal with troublesome cleanup using typical urethane so we tried a water-based exterior production. It sprayed on evenly with minimal thinning, and cleanup was a breeze. The natural wood grain popped after applying the urethane. December 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent for finishing an outdoor art project I picked this up to add a protective finish and a little bit of sheen to a wood sign I made to hang on my back deck. For context, I made it by staining plywood with oil-based stain and then stenciled on lettering using a primer followed by a latex paint. (In hindsight, I should have used a water-based stain, but didn't quite plan ahead. Thankfully, all the online tutorials I read said as long as I waited a week or more before applying the water based spar urethane, I'd be fine. This was wonderful to use. True to its marketing, it has very little odor. The directions suggested applying at least 4 coats, allowing for two hours of dry time in between. I also love that as long as you don't wait more than 24 hours between coats no sanding is necessary between coats. I didn't sand and had no issues with noticeable brush strokes. I found this very easy to apply with a synthetic brush. And the results look great. The finish is exactly what I was going for - a slight gloss, but not a blinding sheen. I also appreciate that it didn't change the color of my art. Only time will tell how well it stands up to the elements, resisting UV rays, mold, etc. But I'm pretty optimistic based on the results so far. Overall I really love this. It's really easy to work with and the results are great. September 1, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Protection Very pleased with the product even though I had to Order online as the store did not carry the product in anywhere within 75 miles of Gatlinburg tn September 2, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very Poor Product Unfortunately I used this product on a number of small outdoor projects. It turns milky white when it rains. On two oak chair rails on my deck mildew appeared. I have spent a considerable amount of time attempting to get the product off of the wood with paint remover. I am now at the point where I will just replace the oak rails. I will not be using Varathane to protect them! April 29, 2013
