Customer Questions & Answers

Is it possible to buy just 1 gallon and not two?

Asked by: Sunday
No, not in gallon sized containers. You could order 2 two-packs of the quart sized containers for a total of about $60, but you would be paying a premium. Unopened containers stay in good condition a long time, but you should gently stir the contents with a paint stick when you open the can. DON"T shake the can.

Can I use this over acrylic paints

Asked by: Babs
Follow manufacturer’s directions for application of the acrylic paint. Make certain the surface is thoroughly dry before applying Varathane Crystal Clear Polyurethane. Please be sure to test Rust-Oleum Varathane Crystal Clear in an inconspicuous area before beginning. Testing is important when applying over paints or stains as the appearance of these products may change slightly when a water-based finish is applied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Poly I have found. Overall a terrific poly that I use for refinishing furniture. Stays clear on painted finishes as well. This is a more professional finish and I believe dries harder that the Varathane poly you see on the shelves at Home Depot. For brushing applications, I thin down some with water so that it flattens out well. I recommend this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great. I use this nearly every day to seal the chalk paint in on my custom signs I make. I use a foam brush and dip it in the poly and smooth it on my signs. It dries in a few minutes and dries nice and clear. I've tried using the spray can versions and have always had problem with those not spraying. Would highly recommend this stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works the way I wanted Did a lot of research into polys to find one that worked for the cypress walls in our home. Lots of stuff for floors, decks, trim, etc - This worked well. Does not spray via pump sprayer, tried and didn't work - didn't want to dilute it either, so just went with wall brush. Sand, clean up, one coat, sand rough spots, second coat - and it looks good. It has a nice finish. We're happy with the end result - hope they keep offering this poly for the future (if we need it)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Leaves stains So I know tye label says that it goes on milky but leaves it clear well it does do that but it also stains it making a yellowish tone to it in some parts and Lao I noticed it makes the color change almost a bit darker shade more pronounced I applied this over light blue chalk paint and the finish feels smooth it will also pronounce to a really dark color the places that you have distressed to make your piece look old antique that will change making it more darker. Overall pretty easy to apply dries pretty fast just 3 stars because of the staining.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE, LOVE LOVE, This Stuff! I have been using the water based Varathane polyurathane in the satin finish for years and years. I have used it all over my house and my family's house. I have done mantles, moldings, kitchen cupboards, banisters and spindles, refinished furniture, the works. It goes on easy. I do sand with steel wool between coats, but you have to be sure to clean with a tack cloth really thouroughly before applying another coat (you don't want steel wool fibers to rust on your work). I do use at least 4 coats, but when I'm finished its as smooth as glass. The finish wears like iron. I haven't found a scratch on anything yet. The 2 compaints I have is: #1) I can't buy it off the shelf, and #2) I can't order just 1 gallon - they come in 2's. Other than that I'm a happy girl.
