Answer:
One quart of Varathane Premium Wood Stain will cover approximately 115-200 square feet depending on the type of wood it is applied to. This being said a case of two 1-quart cans will cover 230-400 square feet.

Answer:
Plan on no more than 300 sq ft per quart first coat, 900 sq ft per quart second coat ... yes, give it two coats to level it out ... on soft woods like pine.
Harder woods like ash and oak will take about 20% less.

Answer:
Without knowing the kind of fake wood you are referring to, it is difficult to give an exact answer. We recommend testing the stain first in a small inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and adhesion of the product. Please keep in mind, Varathane Premium Wood Stain is designed to adhere to bare wood surfaces only.

Answer:
By "fake wood", I think you mean plastic? If so, "no". Stains are carried into the pores of wood by the carriers ... in this case oils ... which are absorbed leaving behind the pigments [color]. If there are no pores, the "stain" can't move and lies on top of the surface where the colors are not anchored.

No, it's not like a gel stain.

Regardless of what the instructions recommend, I usually LIGHTLY "knock down the grain" with 220 or 000 steel wool before applying a second coat of stain.
Recently, I've done a few projects where I postpone that sanding until after the first coat of top coat, e.g. PU, is applied and I've been happy with the results. Read Less

Answer:
Varathane Premium Wood Stain is not a gel stain and does require sanding prior to application to ensure proper penetration. In Varathane Gel Stain formula, a similar color is available called Cabernet. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Cabernet-Gel-Stain-Case-of-2-266334/203368599

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 22 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Takes forever to dry, and leaves it sticky. I love the color. My only complaint is that the paint takes forever to dry. The can says it dries in an hour, it's been 4, and it's still wet. I put a thin layer as well. I'm also noticing that it's leaving a tacky/sticky feeling at touch. Now i need to take another step just to get rid of it. May 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by easy to use This stain went on easy and has great color,I put one coat on the wood in my trailer and it looks great March 31, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by The best stain I have used - but terrible color I do a lot of woodworking in my spare time. Finishing is my favorite part of any project. I apply anything form professional grade sprayed finishes to hand rubbed oil finishes. I don't use stain often, but when I do I am very selective. This 3x stain is amazing stuff. Thick like a gel stain so it is perfect for blotch prone wood like maple and cherry. Coverage really is "3x" I've used gel stains before and this stuff is unreal. I tried a sample on some scrap maple - which is notorious for blotching. Without any washcoat or pre-stain, this went down beautifully with a foam brush. It wiped off clean and dried quick The only issue is the color. It is very purple. Even on a dark wood like black walnut, it shows up a deep purple color. I have already purchased a few different colors of the Varathane 3x and can't wait to use them. I was that impressed. February 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This stain was easy to use and dries fast We wanted to replace our carpet stairs, we bought your stair treads with risers. We used Varathane black cherry stain. With one qt we did 15 stairs and risers and one coat worked just fine. We did have enough to do a second if needed. April 1, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very good product Used for special purpose table stain. Worked well on oak. October 6, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Too purple The result of this stain applied to baltic birch plywood or poplar is way too purple. Perhaps on a different color wood it would turn out nice, but my experience is that I simply have to purchase another product. August 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just Beautiful! We refinished a number of hand-me-down pieces of furniture, and this stain made all the difference. Our "new" pieces look like a million bucks! Clean up was easy. August 4, 2015
