Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used on outdoor furniture, such as IKEA table?

Asked by: Suzannah
Great question, Suzannah! We do not recommend our 3X Cognac Premium Wood Stain for exterior applications. Our Varathane Gel Stain will work well for exterior applications, and we recommend our Varathane Spar Urethane over this for lasting protection: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Early-American-Gel-Stain-Case-of-2-266335/203368601

How do you purchase this product? Don't have it in the stores nor is available online! Why have it listed? Do note you carry Cognac cabinets, you should at least have it available in those stores or available to order.
Asked by: Steve
Some stores do carry this product. I didn't want to wait either, so I managed to find it locally. Try checking all the stores in your area and see if you can find it.

I consistently see that polyurethane is used over this particular stain. I however would like to use lacquer as a top coat. is this possible? Has anyone else tried it? Does anyone have any long-term results from this type of application? Thank you in advance for any information received.
Asked by: John
We like the way you think, John! We recommend applying the lacquer in a test area first to ensure the desired results. Please keep in mind that we Rust-Oleum Varathane 3X Premium Wood Stain fully cures in 24 hours in ideal conditions and temperatures.

1 qt. 3X Cognac Premium Wood Stain is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Color and Allows for Mistakes I used this Varathane in Cognac to stain my wood stairs. I stripped them first with Citrustrip down to the bare wood which was also another good product. I'm one of those do it yourseler moms. While I'm a great painter, I had a learning curve when it came to using stain. I had not used stain in years. I learned that you should not cut in around the stair spindles because it will show when you put the rest of the stain on. So I sanded away where you could see that I did that and re-stained and it looks absolutely lovely. This stuff is forgiving and allows you to make a mistake fix it easily by sanding down a bit, then you can go back and do it again beautifully. I am not done with my project but I'm going to post a photo see you can see how lovely it looks on my floors. I still need to do the spindles, the handrail, and I need to find some type of polyurethane to seal the stairs with. I'm looking for something for floors that has low VOC's and I'm not able to find it. To see my stairs before, look for my review under the Citrustrip product. This app only allows me to post one photo I would like to have posted three to really give you an idea of how great this product is.

This stain offers a very versatile color, and overall I like it very well. I purchased this to use on new stair treads for my main stairway. The wood being pine absorbed the stain almost too well, and I removed as much as possible before sealing with 3 coats of varnish. It covered the wood grain almost too well, though now I can't see the few knots some of the treads have. And, I find that I need to vacuum the steps daily; the darker color shows everything! All-in-all, my stairs look beautiful, especially compared to the lousy wood the builder originally used. Apparently they expected owners to keep the stairs carpeted. I'm going to use this stain on my handrail to match, and eventually on my secondary stairway as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Varathan I simply love Varathan. This not only is a stain, but a sealant to protect the wood. I like the rich depth of color, and you don't have to worry about what kind of wood you apply it to. Most outdoor pressure treated wood doesn't absorb stain very well, so this product will solve that problem. I used this on some fence posts next to my house to pretty them up. I wanted them to blend in with the surrounding landscape. It covers well, its not thin and drippy, it dries fast, and I only needed one coat to make it look nice. Clean up was the same as I use for regular Varathan. I use mineral spirits or turpentine to deep clean my brushes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great product goes on easy and looks great I did half of my front door on my home (see pic attached). This was the best product I have ever used to stain my front door. It goes on easy. I actually used a 57 cent foam brush from Home Depot to apply. It was quick and covered excellent. it goes a long way as I only used a small fraction of the can. I would highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great looking deck I pressure washed my 8 year wooden deck and waited for a week. I started applying the stain and it soaked into the wood within 20 minutes. The stain went on great and looks fantastic!
