This stain is GEORGOUS! Nice rich brown color with darker brown to black looking streaks when it gets into the grain. So happy I decided to get this color!

I was very pleased with this product. I used to to stain an Ikea piece I customized #IkeaHack . I sanded the top and applied a coat of stain with a foam brush. I didn't time it-but did the underside of the sideboard as my test. I figured out that by the time I finished brushing the end of the table top I could go back to the beginning and start wiping with my towel and I was happy with that level of coverage and overall wood tone. It did take about an hour to be dry to the touch, I let it dry for 12 hours before flipping it over and staining the other side. I didn't notice any excessive off gassing. I stained the table inside and there was some residual scent for about an hour or so after the table was dry. It was nowhere near as vile as some of the polyshades stains I've had experience with.
In the past I only recall using polyshades because I thought minwax was a superior product. It always came out sticky and uneven and I was never satisfied. After asking around I learned it was sticky because it was a stain and polyurethane in one and that regular stains are not that difficult to control. When I was at Home Depot I liked the shades of the Varathane more and the person at the paint counter said they'll both work the same and pick based on the color I like not the brand. I'm so glad I did because Kona was the exact shade I was looking for.
The table top is pine, the recessed panels are pine and the vintage drawer pulls are cedar. Despite the different woods I was able to get them close to the same tone with some diligence. The knobs required more then one coat, but this was also probably because I was afraid to leave the stain on too long and have them be too dark. I appreciated having that kind of control over the product. It made the task a lot more pleasant. The stain itself was also easy to work with and wasn't sticky. I didn't get much on my hands but what I did came off fairly easily with soap and water.

I picked this product because I searched for hours on a good stain to use to stain my bathroom vanity. I liked the fact it said one hour dry time and one coat coverage. To be honest, the one coat coverage is not accurate. I ended up doing 3 coats to achieve the color I wanted but if you do thin coats like suggested then it will dry in one hour. My first coat I used a clean white sock to apply it, waited 2 hours then applied a second coat with a foam brush. I left it on for about 2 minutes then wiped the excess off with a white sock. I let the second coat dry over night, the next day applied the third coat with a foam brush and waited 2 minutes before wiping off the excess. Always use a new foam brush and a new white sock for each new coat. I used the Varathane stain polyurethane for the top coat.

I was impressed with the coverage on poplar. Smooth. Wiped off and dried nicely. When clear coated it was indoor furniture quality.

I think it is the perfect color choice. I mixed it with some water seal and used a sprayer to appy it.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Furniturefinisher Good product but be prepared for extended off-gassing
Bought to stain some unfinished furniture. Went on well using a foam brush. Waited a minute then wiped off with clean rag. Looks good BUT be prepared for an extended period of off-gassing. Stained a week ago and still cannot bring furniture into the house. The smell has diminished but (even with a fan running in the garage) the furniture may not be ready until staining +7 or 8 days to bring into the house.
This may be a problem with similar oil-based stains ... just do not be surprised if you have to wait ... or live with the smell for days, and I do mean days!
