Answer:
Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Wood Stain is for application to bare wood. The stain must be able to penetrate into the wood substrate in order for it to properly dry. We recommend removing any existing finishes with sandpaper or paint stripper.

I'd like to take the warmth/golden tones out of a piece of furniture, but still keep it on the lighter side, with a little more grey. Would this stain work on beech?

Answer:
Please keep in mind different types of wood can affect the outcome of the color of the wood stain. We recommend to always test your stain to verify the desired color. Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job.

Rated 2.7 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mixed feelings... Great color option. Just a deeper color than displayed... (can be achieved) October 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not the same color After looking at the picture on the can and in the brochure this looked like a good match. However, the color of the stain in the can and on the wood is not similar to the pictures. June 28, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by it was ok If you like the weathered look then it will work for you. The fact that you don't have to treat the wood is a good thing. June 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Gray-blue, not as pictured I agree with the previous reviewer. I stained untreated pine and it only creates a gray-blue cast, and rather uneven at that. May 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by semi transparent wood stain right color and type of stain in stock, having it available in quarts is a plus for me April 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Color not true I used this stain on several pine boards and it came out to be more of a light blue/grey than what is pictured. There's not even a hint of brown. It's not a bad color if that's what you're looking for, but it's not remotely close to the color pictured. I'm very dissatisfied with this purchase and will now be spending the day sanding down my boards. March 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Varathane Sunbleached stain This is a great product! We used it to stain pain boards for a bed frame and shoe shelves. I would definitely recommend this stain! January 27, 2015
