While oil-based Varathane adds depth and beauty to the wood, this water-based stuff stays on top, merely adding a sheen. It does not enhance the wood in any way! I finished half my shelf using this No Odor Varathane, then went to buy REAL oil-based Varathane instead. The section with water-based was lackluster and boring, and the half with oil-based was spectacular with rich color on the SAME PIECE OF WOOD! I'll never buy water-based again!!! Oddly enough I painted over the water-based Varathane with oil-based, and somehow it was able to enhance the beauty of the wood in the water-based area. I wouldn't recommend doing that: skip the water-based and just use oil. Yes it smells bad, but the end result is sure worth the assault on your senses!
