can I use this on painted doors?

I have wood doors that have been painted many times. I have been able to strip off most of the paint but it's not a perfectly clean wood surface. Can I use this product to stain the door over some remnants of old existing paint? I've seen different things online mentioned a paint/stain combo approach but I am skeptical.

I used this on kitchen cabinets, including some laminate sides (so not even wood). I sanded enough to remove the sheen and a lot of the original stain, but not all. I used 3 coats of this stain and it had total coverage and consistency.

My neighbor purchased a gel stain made by general finish. They were able to apply the stain without sanding or stripping their stair handrails. The result was great, has anyone tried to use this application method with varathane?

Answer:
Varathane Gel Stain can be applied to non-wood surfaces without sanding or stripping. It is important that the surface is clean of dust, dirt, grease or glue with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits and thoroughly dry before application. Always test your stain in a small inconspicuous area to verify the desired color outcome.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this color! This is a reorder. I used this stain to change my dated honey oak cabinets to a rich, modern walnut. The stain was easy to use once I figured out a faster method to apply 3 coats and a coat of poly to each side of the 60 cabinets and drawers! January 19, 2016
