Asked by: BX
Hello BX, You can apply that with the sprayer you may need to thin it out with a thinner so that it will go on more evenly out of the sprayer.

concrete Countertops

I'm waiting on them to cure before I can finish I have to sand them and then mix up a concrete slurry to get rid of imperfections and then resand and then sand I'm looking for something that is scratch resistant and that will protect from stains and food safe and protect from any acid type foods wil this polyurethane work for me
Asked by: Cjm
I would be concerned with it bonding to the concrete. You could use an epoxy designed for sealing concrete. When the sealer dries, sand it to 220 and then apply the polyurethane. I did NOT have good luck with this product - it dried as I was applying it and left brush strokes. I had to sand it back off. I then used 3 coats of Minwax Polyurethane which worked very well.

1 qt. Gloss Triple Thick Polyurethane (Case of 2) is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not lay flat Upon opening this can of Triple Thick Polyurethane from Varathane, I stirred it per the instructions on the can. What I found amusing is that I was able to stand the stir stick vertical all by itself. That is how thick this polyurethane is. The project I used it on was new toe kick boards on my kitchen cabinets. The label instructions suggest you use a decent nylon brush, so I purchased and used one of the better ones available at Home Depot. What I ran into, though the polyurethane spread nicely, I could not get the brush strokes to disappear, regardless of whatever I tried. The boards were laying horizontal on the kitchen table with the house thermostat at 72 degrees. Having extensive experience with polyurethane, I tried using a China brush. Same results. I did not attempt a sanding and reapplication. So in summary, I wasn't impressed with a product I had high hopes for. If you are looking for a polyurethane product to use on a high traffic project, don't wish to take the time to sand and apply a second coat, this may be something to consider.

I used a foam brush as recommended and got a mostly smooth result. There were a few brush strokes that were heavier than others but with a little practice I can eliminate that on subsequent projects. Sanding lightly between coats produced the glass-like finish I want. My son used a bristle brush was was very disappointed with the result as there were multitudes of brush strokes. Use a foam brush with very fine pores.

Many urethane's are very thin which raises the grain of the wood as well as contributing to runs on vertical surfaces. It also necessitates applying several coats. Varathane (triple thick) polyurethane is like syrup, in consistency. This means quite often you will only need one coat. Also, unlike most wood treatment products, Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is practically odorless. And the sweetest part is it cleans up with soap and water. It just doesn't get any better than that.

First coat was streaky, so added a second. Second coat was streaky, so added a final thick THIRD coat. It doesn't look too bad now, except that it scratches super easy, and it's caught every imperfection it could. Plus, some has pulled away from the original surface, so it looks just awful there and I can't remove and re-do because it is over a cheap plywood desk and that would only make things worse. Awful.

I'm not sure it truly replaces 3 full coats of regular poly though. Of course our project was not the best test given it involved kitchen cabinets with a 20 year old finish. The color was richer and deeper just by applying this poly and the cabinets now shine nicely. All in all a very good product. Note: our store only sells individual cans, not the case of 2.

My conditions were 80 degrees with 55% humidity and I experienced the rapid drying and visible brush strokes noted by many others. Other than spraying or pouring (obviously a bad idea), I can't imagine what I could have done differently to prevent the brush strokes. The product simply is NOT self leveling, at least it wasn't for me. I had to sand everything back down and use a traditional poly with a 4 hour dry time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stay away!!! I bought this to use on a table I built to give it a thick, glossy finish... Like it claims. I waited SEVEN DAYS between coats for the full cure, and when I went to sand it smooth to topcoat it, the finish started peeling off. I returned the product, and had to take the whole table back to wood and start over. HUGE waste of time. Do not buy.
