Customer Questions & Answers

Will this seal the wood against water? I want to use it under the kitchen sink.

Asked by: Marrss777
I would avoid this product altogether if you want a smooth finish. I can't speak to the waterproof quality, but I've been struggling all weekend to get a smooth coat. Sanding, re-applying, and finally giving up and stripping it right off. It's too thick to spread evenly even with a good brush, and over-brushing leaves every brush mark showing. I've always had good luck with Minwax products (both oil and water-based, so I'd stick with one of those products.

I decided to try this product because Home Depot was out of semi-gloss Minwax Polycrylic, which has always worked well for me. This Varathane product is so thick it's very hard to apply evenly, and It does NOT self-level as advertised. Even with careful application with a high-quality brush, sanding between coats, and trying different application techniques, it did not level at all. I'm left with a surface so bad I'll have to sand it right down and start over with a better product. Also, note that it clogs sandpaper almost immediately so even getting rid of this garbage will be misery! This is the worst polyurethane ever. Wish I could give negative stars.

I am refinishing my kitchen and it was suggested that I use the triple thick variety so I would not have to do so many separate coats. It is very difficult to work with and produces an uneven finish to my kitchen cabinets. By the time I got to the bottom of the can the product was getting thicker and gummy. I had to change paint brushes three times with each can. I am NOT satisfied with the product and I will have to sand and refinish the cabinets again. This product added a lot more work to this job. I would not recommend this product for doing kitchen cabinets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too Thick to brush on smoothly There are no shortcuts to a good finish, and a "triple thick" finish promising one-coat coverage is no exception. First, I'm a fan of water-borne finishes, and enjoy the original Varathane Polyurethane. I usually use three coats of it on any furniture project; however, I always have to sand the first coat since the water base raises the grain. The same is true with this thicker finish, so at least two coats are required. Unfortunately the thickness of this poly makes brushing evenly nearly impossible, and it starts to set long before it "self levels". The thick coat means it must dry long after each coat to sand, and it was impossible to "sand out" the final coat to get a really smooth finish. I tried thinning the product with water, and while that helped with brushing and dry times, it still meant three or more coats. While there might be a cost savings if one buys this product and thins it to the viscosity of the original, there's certainly no time savings, and the end result is a finish that's not quite as good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 1 = 3 coat scam Like the other reviewer I have lots of experience with urethanes indoors and out. When it's done my way with 5 coats I always get one of two comments. Can I come to their house and do something with some kind of wood ( one kind of wood project and suddenly they think I'm an expert at anything to do with wood ). Or that thing is wet don't set your stuff on it. I don't like to speak ego but I do feel I need to qualify my experience. Plain and simple DO NOT BUY THIS. Doesn't self level leaving ridges everywhere. 1 coat is suppose to equal 3. Worst of all 1 coat does not even look like 1/2 a coat. . I thought hey 2 coats will equal 6 so after 2 coats I will have a look better than my usual 5. First coat nothing and I mean nothing. Thinking maybe the second coat will make it pop then seeing nothing again. I mean nothing, no shine, no depth, no wet look. To be honest it looked better before this just bare wood. Now I have to mask up and cover completely to sand this stuff off and go buy urethane and not some gimmick. Hopefully Home Depot will work with me cause not just the money I paid I have to sand and start over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm Satisfied I'm ready to go out and buy my second can. I use a foam brush to apply the polyurethane to my wood projects. The stuff is thick, but I tend to spread it thin.....so I'm putting on 2 or three coats. I'm quite satisfied with the final results..........it dries fast and I have no problem using it in cold weather.
