Can this be used to spray paint plastic... like Gatorade bottle plastic and if so will it wash off the bottle if it gets wet ?
Asked by: Kylee
No, Kylee. Rust-Oleum Varathane Polyurethane Spray will not adhere to a plastic surface. Please keep in mind, some types of plastics cannot be painted and may melt or warp when sprayed with a solvent or oil based paint/finish. Always test a small area to ensure compatibility.

Can this be used on a painted wood surface? If you dont know whether paint was oli or water based would you recommend this or the water based variety?

We have a chain saw wood sculpture which has some painted surface and some unpainted wood surfaces. We keep this indoors. We don't know what type of paint was used, whether it was water or oil based and cant find out because our chain saw sculptor has passed away. Would you suggest we use the oil based or the water based version of this product? We are purchasing some Varathane outdoor water based exterior polyurethane spray for outdoor projects, and are interested in your input if we could use this also on the indoor wood sculpture noted above or if we should use this product.
Asked by: doglove
Yes, Rust-Oleum Varathane Polyurethane can be applied over painted wood. We recommend allowing the paint to cure for at least 7 days before applying Polyurethane. Please be aware that if applying an oil based Polyurethane over a light colored paint, it could yellow. Test the product compatibility in a small inconspicuous area first. You may consider instead Rust-Oleum Varathane Crystal Clear Polyurethane, it is water based. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Gloss-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-Case-of-2-200041H/202057129

Varathane polyurethane is more expensive compared to other brush-on products but the ease of application made it a better choice for my project. I applied 3 light coats which provided some very nice color without any runs or sags. I'm unsure how durable the product will be in the long run. Make sure to only use this for indoor projects as recommended by the manufacturer. For safety, only use this product in an area with very good ventilation. The nature of spray-on products means that there will be a lot of this product in the air. Because the temperatures outside were below freezing I applied this product in a basement bathroom and left the door closed with a window open and fan on. Even doing this I felt like my thinking was just slightly foggy after applying the product.

The spray works well - much better than brush-on. The semi-gloss gives just the right amount of sheen, and finish appears highly scratch resistant. How to get the best results: - Polyurethane curing time is subject to humidity and temperature, so pick good weather if you're working in an unheated garage. - Invest in a motorized palm sander. I started my project with a manual sander and my large surface ended up uneven. Once I used the Makita palm sander the surface ended up super smooth and the spray worked better. - After sanding wait for the dust to settle and use a tack cloth to pick up any dust of the surface. Wipe the surface a few times before spraying. - Use several thin coats. The more coats you put on the more curing time you need in-between. I waited 36 hours for my final coat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ehhh It dripped quite a bit, so I stopped using it for the project I bought it for. I was refinishing a bureau and wanted a shine finish, but didn't like that you could see drips.
