We currently have wood but are converting to vinyl and still use the wood posts, just putting the vinyl over the wood.

I have used these on both true 4" x 4" outside posts and also treated pine "4x4" posts which are dimensionally 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"...
To fit these onto a true 4" x 4" post, I cut a short length of treated pine 4 x 4, approx 3" in length...check the treated pine will fit inside both the bottom of the lamp and the top opening of the post. Put one end of the 4x4 treated piece inside the bottom of the lamp Read More

Answer:
As far as I know, the entire unit is rust free. I haven't had them through winter yet. But, with the watering, I haven't seen any implication of rusting.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 334 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 4x4 WhitePlastic Solar Powered Post Cap Bought these to spruce up my older deck. Easy to install, lights are very bright and last through sunrise (for now). The only drawback is they look plastic. But they were a great price. July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap but will see how they work Bought these because of the reviews. I can only hope they last! July 21, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Does not fit 4x4 vinyl railing posts ***Does not fit 4x4 vinyl posts*** I wish I could rate the quality, but unfortunately they didn't fit my 4x4 post covers. These are soley made for 4x4 wooden post that actually measures 3.5-3.75 inches. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solar post caps The best buy for the money. They are beautiful at night and day makes the fence look great. Will order more when they get them back in stock. Thank you. July 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by solar post caps The lights create more of a "lantern" lighting which is nice. The top of the fixture fits loose to the body of the product. Hoping they will not be easily knocked off. Have ordered these before. Like most solar products they have limited life & more expensive does not mean last longer in the solar lighting world. (Not a permanent fix) Nice look for the price. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I needed Lights work and illumine enough of my deck steps to see at night. June 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap Cheap we sent it back and bought the more expensive lights June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mike.B Great lights for the price,I've had them on my deck post for 3 years and their still shining bright. June 10, 2016
