We currently have wood but are converting to vinyl and still use the wood posts, just putting the vinyl over the wood.

I have used these on both true 4" x 4" outside posts and also treated pine "4x4" posts which are dimensionally 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"...
To fit these onto a true 4" x 4" post, I cut a short length of treated pine 4 x 4, approx 3" in length...check the treated pine will fit inside both the bottom of the lamp and the top opening of the post. Put one end of the 4x4 treated piece inside the bottom of the lamp Read More

Answer:
As far as I know, the entire unit is rust free. I haven't had them through winter yet. But, with the watering, I haven't seen any implication of rusting.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 211 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value for the money These lights are for the vinyl fence posts...NOT wood posts. The material is adequate and the light is great for a decoration to the yard. Not too bright, but certainly bright enough for most folks. I put a little silicone between the base and the lens so high winds wouldn't blow the light portion off, as it's not a very tight fit. But they work well and are reasonably priced. If the battery does need replacing in the future, the silicone will be easy to remove. These units really dress up the fence and yard. Note: there's an "on-off" switch inside the unit near the battery. Remember to check this if the lights don't come on when you first set them up. August 30, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by HUGE NOT GOOD SURPRISE!! Here's the deal. I would NOW give these lights a 5 star...BUTT.....we thought by the picture that these lights would fit over our 4"X4" vinyl posts. NOT......my husband had to go buy a 4x4 cedar post, cut it down for all 29 lights, put it inside the lights, then put that cedar post inside our vinyl post and attach with screws which we had to go back and buy extra of....Now the lights look beautiful but what a lot of extra work! We love them now! August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by AWESOME Easy to set up, easy to install, soft light (or as bright as you want by how many you use) They do need a good amount of sunlight - but mine go dusk to dawn with no problems. We love them. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 4 x 4 White Plastic Solar Post Caps What a nice way to have light driving up to the house! August 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Good light didn't last long, the plastic discolored, kept changing batteries still work intimately August 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very bright, long lasting. I live on the West River and have a 100 foot pier. I installed 12 of these the full length, about every eight feet. I mounted them on 4x4 posts about 2feet tall. They were very easy to mount. They come on early in the evening and during the night, they are very bright, and reflecting in the water. When I get up in the morning, they are still lit. Very pleased. July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 4x4 WhitePlastic Solar Powered Post Cap Bought these to spruce up my older deck. Easy to install, lights are very bright and last through sunrise (for now). The only drawback is they look plastic. But they were a great price. July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap but will see how they work Bought these because of the reviews. I can only hope they last! July 21, 2016
