Questions & Answers

What is the actual length of the six foot sections?

I need 5 ft 10 in from wall to column just wondering if this would work or if I will need a bigger piece.
Asked by: catfish0104
68" is the max length of a 6' section.

PVC versus Composite

The Veranda Traditional Pre-Built PVC railing is less expensive than the Veranda Regency Composite railing. From this pricing, is it safe to assume that Composite is of better quality/durability than the PVC? Or is there some reason to select one over the other without regard to pricing? Thanks !

I've actually looked at the 6' sections in store and they do NOT have aluminum insert. The 8' kit has aluminum insert in top rail only.

does top rail meet building codes for strenght, sometimes you need an aluminum inseert in the top rail

Asked by: gerry
As far as I know (and read) this railing meets the standards if installed correctly. The top rail on the six foot model is reinforced. I believe that an 8' section needs an aluminum insert. But I would use the 6' sections because I believe the 8' sections wouldn't meet the code in some areas.

How far apart should the 4X4 posts be installed?

I am having a deck built. The 4X4 posts will be set in concrete footings. I want to install 6' vinyl railings with post covers. Exactly how far apart must the posts be set to use the stock railings? And how high should the posts rise above the deck to use the post covers? I would like to do as little cutting as possible; however if the last section is short of 6', can I cut these to fit? Please help so I can give the contractors exact specification before they start the deck.
Asked by: MadamB
Be careful. By my calculations, the posts should be on 71 1/2 inch centers. The railings are 67.75. Adding .25 for expansion, that means an opening of 68 inches is needed. Two 4x4 posts on 71 1/2 inch centers will give you this gap.

My contractor told me what to purchase for my project and said to get 6 Ft. railings. Expecting them to be somewhat close to 6 Ft. they ended up being more like 5 ft. 3 in. I had to return them and get the 8 ft. (which are only a little over 7 ft) and cut them. This is very deceiving!! Yes, I should have read the specs better, but if you see 6 ft. why should you have to look at what they really are?? I would only recommend because they do look nice for the price, but I ended up paying more because of the extra length so I'm not sure if they ended up a better bargain or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking Product We chose this railing for the ease of installation, but fell in love with how beautiful it is. Chose to use contrasting color post sleeves to match my Trex Enhance deck. Very happy with the results. Pops and myself installed 12 panels in just 1 day! Used a 10" composite blade on a miter saw to trim the ends. Start with the largest opening so if you make a mistake measuring, you can re-use in a smaller opening. IMPORTANT: End balusters keep the railing together as a unit. Use a bungee cord to hold railing together if you cut off a baluster on either end. This keeps the railing together till you install it. Saves you a big headache. :)

I purchased two of these railings because I extended my deck and changed the configuration. 12 years ago I bought this same brand from home depot and I was able to use almost all my old railings. When I installed the new railing up to the post and put the old railing to the post there was a 1 1/2 inch height difference. The new balusters are much smaller. Luckily I had left over smaller sections of old railings which I was able to breakdown and place in the new railings. This should not have been the case. The railings are not 6x3. If I did not have the old balusters I would have had to tear all the railings down and buy the new ones. 12 railings at 50 each is pretty expensive. I would not recommend this product if someone is adding to a pre-existing structure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected If you are like me, your concerns about this modest priced rail is "is it cheap looking and lacks strength?". The answer is "NO". The quality is great and it literally transformed the front porch and steps/ramp to an elegant entry. Every item fit well purchased for assembly from brackets to slant of the stair rails for a ramp instead of steps.. I purchased the 4X4 post covers to slip over my treated lumber for both the short support posts and the 8' roof supports posts. I now have a permanent, strong entry. So don't worry about the price of these rails compared to the higher price rails. I cant imagine a better look or strength from a higher priced product.

The section is only 67.75". not 6' as advertised. Home Depot needs to correct their website for this. They did replace the 4 "6 foot" sections I bought with their "8 ft" section, so still great to work with.

Easy to install and it is more sturdier that I thought it would be. I had to cut it to size as it was larger than I needed, but that task was easy also.
