I can say with near certainty that product 73019000 given in the other answer will not work with this railing. That bracket is for Veranda "traditional" railings; this is the "premier" product. I've installed this product at my home, so I took a measurement for you. I'm afraid there is no "usual". The rise and run of exterior steps can vary greatly, with the run being the bigger factor. For example, the run might be 10", give or take, as with a standard interior staircase, or it might be 17" as in my installation.

You need to take some measurements. Figure out where your posts will be and measure at the desired angle of the railing. The rails are 67"; the max length is 68" when adding a 1/2" for each bracket.
Be advised that this product may not work for installations somewhat shorter than 68". The baluster holes are precut in the rails. When cutting the rails to length you do not want to cut through the rail holes such that some of the holes are exposed after the brackets are placed on the end. You'd be very unhappy with how that would look besides perhaps compromising the integrity of the system. Also, for a nice clean job you want the balusters on each end to have the same distance from their respective posts
So, if your installation is somewhat less than 68" in length, say 64" give or take, I think you just might have to order it, see where the rail holes line up before cutting, and if it doesn't work out return the product. I was told I could return this product to the store before I ordered on-line in case it didn't work out; fortunately I didn't have to test that advice. Read Less

Rated 2.3 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by A horror to install This product is used as a stair rail in a vinyl fence/rail installation. It is not a product that should be taken on by a weekend warrior, or even a pro that has never worked with it before. It requires a special tools to cut it and is very difficult to do so because of the irregular shapes on the handrails. In most installations it requires that the brackets that mount the rail to the supporting posts be trimmed to the required angle to fit flush to the post. (An angle that must be determined by the installer.) This is also a difficult task to perform. In my case, I found it so difficult to make a smooth cut that I had to re-order the brackets because of a bad cut on the first attempt. The product also mars easily and you are almost certain to do so because of the way that the product is engineered. There is no way to repair nicks, scrapes and scratches. If you really want this type of rail, get someone to install it that does it regularly and closely inspect the work before accepting. April 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Brackets and Instructions are an Issue The quality of the materials is good; the installation is an issue. Unlike a video you might find for this product, the brackets now being shipped have no stair angle adjustment. The rail ends must be cut to 32 degrees to fit in the brackets, then the brackets are cut (!) to fit the angle of your stair rail. Measure 3 or 4 times to get both the length and angle right, then cut twice. I say twice because it would be advisable to make one conservative cut, check the angle and make a final cut if necessary. The instructions seem to suggest as much. Cut the brackets carefully...very stable and fast. Any movement of the material might mess with your angle and/or chip the bracket. Clamp it to your miter saw backstop if possible. The instructions recommend using a deck board to determine the stair angle. You'll find this to be inexact. I recommend clamping a steel ruler to the posts at the precise points you wish to attach the brackets and then take the angle and length measurements off of that. Further, the instructions have you copy the length and angle for the top rail off of the bottom rail measurements. I suppose this might be fine if your posts are perfectly vertical. I'd recommend measuring each rail separately using the method above. If there is any difference in length between the top and bottom, be sure the baluster holes line up before cutting the top rail...you want your balusters vertical. There is very little room for error in cutting these rail brackets if you're looking for a tight, clean fit. This product requires a lot of time and patience, more so than if the bracket angles were adjustable. October 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The stairrail is sturdy and works well. I am very pleased with the guardrail and stairrail purchased from Home Depot. The materials were easy to work with, and the finished product presents well. The supplier called me to confirm some materials not compatible, modified the order request, thru the process, and I received the correct product. The delivery time was prompt, and process of delivering the product to the store for pickup worked well. We look forward to ordering more in the future. February 12, 2013
