I believe that these composite boards would span an 8 foot gap with no problem. I used 3 - 2x4 pressure treated boards for stringers (support rails) and the gap between posts was 8 feet. I do recommend using four rails for stringers though. That is what I am using with this installation now. Answer:
I spanned 8 ft, with 3 rails, but I screwed the top rail to another 2x4 on top of the post, forming an L-shape. This stiffened the rail to prevent sagging. I also spanned 2 posts with 16 ft. 2x4's and staggered each rail, to help firm up the posts. They won't warranty their product unless you by all their posts and rails, but I am taking that chance.

Answer:
The Veranda composite pickets are heavier than traditonal wood pickets, which is why we limit the size of the fence section to a 6' width. It minimizes the potential for the rails to sag from the weight of the composite. It is not recommended to install in 8' wide sections.

I will be attaching pickets to pressure treated rails and 4x4s. What kind of lag screws should I use and what does touch tighten mean?

Answer:
Thank you for your question. We do not recommend the use of the composite pickets with wood framing, nor do we recommend the use of screws to install the pickets to wood. This project would not be covered under the warranty if installed in this manner.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 17 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by VERY HAPPY Very happy with my puchase and the help and service I received from the Newton, NJ location. This product looks absolutely beautiful and does not require any stain. Home Depot had everything I needed to do the job, right down to the matching color screws. If your looking to do a fence, check this product out, you won't be dissappointed. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Multi-Use This can be used for all sorts of things. Here in Florida, wood tends to rot, so I like to use this in place of wood. It is very easy to hand cut. August 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Shorter than typical pickets and heavy I ended up going with lumber instead - the idea of something that wouldn't fade or be susceptible to termites was really appealing but plastic lumber just has too many issues like: 1. You need additional cross rails 2. Limits on the distance you can span between posts 3. Height - really wasn't psyched about my fence dropping 3 inches in height I was able to return this at my local store which I really appreciate. Home Depot is great. This product just wasn't for me May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, online ordering could be smoother We really like the quality of the fencing, it's exactly as we expected. It looks even better after we finished putting up the fence. Just as an FYI, we put up a "shadowbox" style fence using the narrow side of a 2x4 as the gap between pickets. Installed on pressure treated 2x4 rails and thick steel posts...mostly in 6' sections. August 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to work with I modified the fencing to fit my needs. Cutting the pickets, posts, rails was easy and not noticeable. I went with this type fencing to defeat termites and improve the looks of my yard/garden. December 9, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not A Sturdy Product This is a flimsy product. Most boards are warped in some manner. You have to bend them into shape. It takes three 2X4 cross supports per section to keep them reasonably aligned. Several edges/corners arrived crushed. The cut dog ear edges leave an exposed composite material that can flake--I will be sealing these edges. For the cost or less, a high quqlity cedar product can be purchased, which is what I would do if I could start over. September 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Composite gates. The composite picket fence pieces were perfect for my two gates. One gate was 48" wide and the other 60" wide. The height was exactly has I needed. I used brown treated 2" X 4" backing and fastened the pickets with 2" decking screws. The gates look good and no more picket painting. Since the gates were so wide and tall; the pickets had to be crossed braced to make them ridged. I also put a 2" X 4" across the bottom edges to prevent bending. The hinges were fastened to a 2" X 4" secured to the block walls with lag bolts. I had to rip one piece of picket fencing on each gated to fill the gate opening perfectly. The picket fence material cut well with a sharp hand saw. The picket fencing was great to to work with. No painting, no splinters, no problem. July 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE THIS PRODUCT EASY TO ASSEMBLE BUT LITTLE HEAVY. DOES NOT GET ROTTEN LIKE WOOD AND DOES NOT GET THE TERMINTES October 13, 2015
