Answer:
I would recommend pre drilling and countersinking them. You still might cam out the heads.

Answer:
Thank you for your question. Pre-drilling is required at the ends of the boards, but is optional elsewhere. It will provide a cleaner appearance if the holes are pre-drilled.

I need to make an adjustment on my deck steps (Veranda Composite) that I have installed using the STAR PAN-HEAD BROWN COMPOSITE DECK SCREWS. Is it OK to remove and reinstall them? Do I need to put some kind of sealer in or around the screw?

Answer:
Thank you for your question. You do not need to use any type of sealer around the screw when removing and reinstalling. The screw should be reusable, but you may want a few spares on hand in case any strip.

The paint in the head of these screws prevents the bit from going in all the way, so they cammed out just before they got all the way in. I pre-drilled to a little over 2", but all of the screws stopped about 1/4" short. Then I couldn't back them out. I had to use chanel-lock pliers to get them out. I had read that other reviewers had this issue, but there was a comment that the manufacturer had recognized the problem and corrected it. Not so. I took mine back after 5 attempts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ron I used stainless steel and the heads split due to poor quality. Found many screws were not properly formed and had splits in the head which spread before seating. Impossible to remove.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Deck Screws for composite Decking Just got through installing Jacuzzi in ground and built a Composite Deck around it and these screws posed nothing but problems they would not counter sink, would not grab half the time, some even snapped even after pre drilling even tried with out pre drilling wound up buying some other composite deck screws that worked like magic they even counter sunk

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Would not use again Color matches the woodland brown exactly and head of screw countersinks nice and smooth. The problem is you have to pre-drill every hole and stainless is a soft metal that will strip out. I have been a contractor for 20 years and have never had so many problems with screw threads and heads stripping and even had to scrap some expensive decking because the screws needed to be drilled out. I would not recomend this screw and will not use again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Miserable screw fastener Very poor head design will cam out on about half the screws, , This prevents them from being unscrewed or driven farther. used a milwaukee drill driver made for just this work. Spent most of my time removing stripped, half driven screws with pliers. Save your money, buy a good star drive screw by a different manufacturer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Heads cam out. They match the color of the composite decking. But about 1/4 of them cammed out.. I didn't finish 10 boards befor I brought them back. I tried pre drilling and countersinking and still had the problem. Will try stainless square d next

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect screws for the Veranda deck boards. The enclosed drill bit fit great and there was very little slipping. Bit lasted for entire container of screws.
