Spacing

What is the spacing on these connectors?
Asked by: Ronn
board to board spacing is taken care of by the fastener, end to end board spacing depends on the outside temperature when installing - go here http://www.verandadeck.com/products/composite-decking/armorguard/ and download the PDF.

Can the fasteners be used if my deck boards are at 45 degrees? If so, do the screws poke through the sides of the joists and is it any less secure than perpendicular board installation?
Asked by: Scott29x
Thank you for your question. Yes, the fasteners can be used on diagonal installations and no, the screws will not be evident. The boards are not less secure, but joist spacing will need to be reduced to no more than 12" on center for proper support.

For 1, the metal is very soft and the screw strips easily. 2 These only work if every piece of wood is perfectly straight (joists and decking) and they all have to line up perfectly. many of the joists I received from HD had a little bow or twist in them which made these fastners impossible to use, because if everything isn't completely flat and if your deck boards have the slightest bow in them, it's almost impossible to get everything snapped in together, especially if you're working with 16' length deck boards or more. I returned them and went with composite deck screws instead and my life was much better.

It had plastic trex fasteners and screws. I reused all the Trex fasteners and screws and had no problems. I didn't have enough Trex fasteners so I went to the Armor Guard boxes I had. The screws would not even start just spin so I had to predrill every hole before installing the screws. If I didn't drill it deep enough the screw heads would strip out. Save time and trouble and buy a good reliable product but not ArmorGuard they make cheap non performing junk. If you want to have to predrill every screw hole as I had to do buy ArmorGuard otherwise avoid this product like the plague. The screws that came with the Trex easily self started and did not strip out. No pre-drilling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fasteners for Veranda decking I have installed different brands of composite decking and I must say that I prefer this type of clip to other brands. It is made of metal with teeth that actually grab into the material and pulls it down tight to the joists. When installing deck boards to joists, make sure the joists are even. Take your time and use a level to find high spots. Then plane to make them level. I found it easy to install 20 foot decking myself once the joists were even.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from End result is nice, screws are cheap These fasteners give a clean and finish look to the deck. The spacing is a little wider than I expected (about 1/4"), but doesn't look bad at all. My only gripe is with the screws. They seem cheap and strip extremely easily- one wrong move with the driver and that's a wrap for the screw. I do not recommend using the bit provided in the kit...purchase a long #1 square bit that allows you to easily maneuver between the boards, and screw straight. The bit provided is too short and forces you to screw at an angle as you get closed to the joist, making it easy to strip the screws heads. Overall, not bad. Price tag is a bit high given the quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Really enjoyed using these fasteners - they made the deck look great, were easy to use and actaully helped in aligning the boards. Expected the automatic spacing (which is great) but was pleasantly surprised that when you tighten down the fastener it will push the board just a bit which really helped sometimes when it was just a bit out of alignement. Had plenty of butt fasteners left over (using mostly 16ft Veranda composite boards) however there are no problems using these in place of the regular fasteners so no big deal. Agree with the other posts that a smaller qty. $25-$30 box would be helpful.
