Hello and thank you for your question. Yes, a wood 4x4 would work great as a support post.

My biggest gripe is that the sections are only 5'8" long. The traditional sections are 6'. I expected to pay extra for the Williamsburg style, but didn't expect to pay more and get shorter spans. The shorter lengths forced me to add spacers and a larger post than originally planned. I'd guess many people start out looking at the tradition style due to it's lower price, but upgrade to the Williamsburg during their research phase, so I doubt I'm the first one to face this issue. If there's valid reason for the traditional sections being 6' long, why doesn't the same logic apply to the Williamsburg sections?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 6 ft. vs. 8 ft rails My porch needed 4- 8 ft sections and 4-6 ft. sections. The 4 ft. section came in as stair rails, and I had to re order them for porch rails. WELL, 3 weeks later they came in and are really flimsy compared to the 8 ft sections that have an aluminum channel that runs the length of both the top rail and bottom rail. The 6 ft sections have NO aluminum support in either the top or bottom, and flex with any weight on them. The 8ft. sections are well made , and very strong. These are horrible. If you are going to do this project, order the 8 ft section and cut them down. You will pay thru the nose for them, but you will not be sick like I am using the flimsy 6 ft lengths..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Front porch update The railings are just what we needed to complete the front porch revamp. We had installed the main porch support posts earlier. The overall effect once the railings are installed speaks for itself in the photos, we are very pleased with the (almost) finished project. The stair rail still needs to be installed to complete the job. The concrete path needs drilling, so I have to wait until I have a hammer drill. Despite original "fears" that vinyl would not be strong enough for the job, the components are extremely sturdy and, at the same time, very easy to cut to size and very lightweight. There are fixings a-plenty and the installation does not require any "expert" skills, just a saw, a drill and a screwdriver and a spirit level. You don't even need a 2nd set of hands. Don't forget to buy the post supports and all the "finishing off" knick knacks like base trim and top caps.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Assembled dimensions are in correct The website and the manufacturer's brochure show the assembled dimension as 33 1/2", however, the assembled dimensions are actually 33 1/2" using the standard brackets. The dimension is 34 1/4" if you use the adjustable angle brackets. Using the spacer piece at the bottom adds another 3". So, you will need at least 36 1/2' of flat surface on the posts to attach to in the first case and 37 1/2" in the second case. My posts were 34 1/2" so I could not use the 3" spacers and had to modify the angle brackets as well by cutting off part of the bottom attachment area. Was not happy at all and it made the installation fairly difficult and very time consuming. I would have just sent everything back but could not find another railing of the desired design.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed in dimensions when received We really like the style of the railings, but the size was not right. We went by the advertised size (6' x 3'), when, in fact it actually measures 5'8" x 3'. We needed the extra 4" for our porch and were disappointed that they did not fit. In the specs it did say that the measurement was 5'8" but we didn't think the dimensions would be something other than what was stated on the picture on the webpage. We had to take these back (3 of them) and reorder 8' pieces that were double in price for 2 more feet. Especially since we only needed 4" more for each piece. If the length was the same as advertised, they would have fit perfectly. The project is costing us a lot more than we anticipated. We will like the end result I'M SURE, but it is a little disheartening to know the project is more costly than we anticipated. We would have rethought our choice if we had known. I want to say that the staff at Home Depot was excellent through this process and we love shopping here because they are so knowledgeable and helpful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from We've been decieved by Home Depot Don't call this handrail assembly 6 ft when it is only 67.75" long. The recommended attachment brackets are 1.25" long so if you added them together you only get 70.25" (and that's without any engagement in the brackets). This is false advertising and deceptive. If you really need a 6' assembly you have to but an 8' assembly which is more than twice twice the cost, for just 2 feet more. Is this gouging or what?
