Can a rail section be attached directly to existing porch posts (the posts that hold up the porch roof) with the brackets?

can railing be cut to size

Asked by: john
Sure, I've been cutting them all afternoon. You need to be careful if you care about how the spindles align to the posts, but it is quite doable.

Can you provide custom lengths?

I have a section that is slightly longer the 8 ft. Currently it is one section that is 105". Can that be custom ordered?
Asked by: vjv
Hello and thank you for your question. We do not offer custom lengths. The Williamsburg is currently only available in 6ft and 8ft lengths.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Update review 4 months later..... Ok. After my initial review, another issue has come up. Algae and mildew. I noticed when I installed these that there were no drain holes on the bottom of the lower rail. Really didn't think too much about it at the time..... Well, I should have. Turns out that with all the heavy rain this year, the water runs down the spindles and into the lower rail. Tight fit at the ends causes water to drain very slowly and only where it attaches to the vertical posts. The result is that the post will stay wet for days resulting in a lot of algae in a warm humid summer. this algae was also on the wood surrounding the post. Went around today and drilled holes in the bottom side of all the lower rails. This wasn't too big a project because my deck is high enough that I could just pull the bottom brackets off and swing out the rail. Water poured out of several of them. Also had to pull out the aluminum I-channel that runs the length of the rail and drill a number of holes along it's length otherwise the water will still end up at the posts. Hopefully now there will be no problem with drainage. The good news is, the rails cleaned up nicely with some Jomax and bleach. They look like new. Bottom line, I still like these rails and the way they look.....but if you put them in, be sure to add a number of drain holes to the bottom of the lower rail and in the I-channel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product - Poor instructions! Just installed 6 sets of these. Overall seems to be a well made product. But instructions leave something to be desired. Good instructions and it would be a 5. First...check the height of the center support. Instructions say to use 3" temporary support blocks but center support is NOT 3". Slightly less resulting in a slight sag in the bottom rail when sighted down the rail. This really ticked me off because it would have been easily avoided if the instructions were correct, or center support was correct length. ....or if I measured the center support....but I trusted the instructions. I attached to wood posts with vinyl sleeves. It was MUCH easier to install by attaching the top bracket first rather than the bottom as mentioned in the instructions. If bottom is done first, you need someone else to hold the top in place. By doing top first, I was able to set on the support blocks and install by myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced Wooden Railings Used this in replacing wooden railings that were starting to decay. Easy to install and I did it all myself.(I'm a 63 yr old female!). Resembles the old wooden rails. Cost of vinyl is more than wood but seeing as I don't plan to have to do this again, the cost is well worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product is pretty much as advertised. It comes in a "kit" form, which means that you have to assemble. However this didn't prove to be difficult at all. It comes with clear concise instructions. You should also be aware of the fact that this product isn't exactly 96 inches but about 4 inches shorter. This worked for my application as it was a bit shorter than the 8 ft. If your application is exactly 8ft then this product will be to short.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Williamsburg rail kit Well made product. Instructions could have been better. I had to call the manufacturer to ask how to install the spindles because the ends are different.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks amazing. Although the look is amazing the measurements are 92 inches not 96 . I had to adjust my posts to make it work.
