Customer Questions & Answers

Can I cut slats and adjust bottom rail for slanted bottom

Asked by: alb
The GATE is the most difficult to assemble correctly. I would not want to attempt slanting the gate. However, slanting the FENCE should be pretty easy. If you are talking of a slight slant for up or down hill, you may not need to cut inserts. The spacing between slats is determined by how many you use, and there is quite a bit of space in the upper and lower horizontal supports. The excess space between slats is for temperature change expansion. When you get the fence, 'temporarily' assemble it flat on the lawn and slide it as though it is going up or down hill. Then you can see how much (if any) you need to cut for your slant.

Can I shorten the gate posts. My fence measures 68 inches the gate post 73 inches.

Asked by: Ed
Gate posts can be shortened, however, putting them deep enough in the ground is to prevent freezing & thawing that could possibly move or slant the post. If you refer to the 'posts' as the vertical posts actually part of the 'gate', like the post that swings with the hinges, yes you can make it shorter.

In response to the answer, don't the vertical boards have ot be cut to make the gate narrower.?

The original question was can the 4x6 gate be adjusted to fit a 44.25 inch opening.
Asked by: Ed
There are 2 'spacers' for the vertical pieces that allows you to make your gate have a width 'range' without cutting anything. The end 2 pieces of the 48" gate are 4" each. You could just leave one out. All others are 6" in width. My gate actual size finished at 47" with both 'spacers' and 3/4" at both ends to allow gate swing, so as well as not pinch fingers.

The specs say hardware is included , are the hinges shown in picture included or not?

Asked by: Confused
The gate hinges ARE included BUT they they are DESIGNED for 4x4 posts. If you are working from a 2x4 or 2x6 support board you will need other hinges.

Customer Reviews

Yellowstone 4 ft. W x 6 ft. H Sand Vinyl Un-Assembled Fence Gate is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product but missing information The gate kit is a very good product but the Home Depot web page did not provide any information detailing the rail size that was included with the kit. Because this was the first time that I have purchased this type of fence I did not know that there were different size rails available for the gates. My fence panels had 5.5 inch rails but the gate kit came with 7 inch rails. This causes a mismatch in appearance with the fence. I think it would be very important for the customer to know that there are different rail sizes that the gate can be ordered with. Other than this issue I believe that the vinyl gate kit is a very good overall product and matches the fence fairly well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy gate The overall quality of the gate is acceptable. Assembly is straightforward once all screws are found. Gate comes with hinges so you don't have to order the hinge kit

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Missing slats Fence was not a completed item, the small slats with the adjustable trim was not in the package. Had to cut my own from leftover fencing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outdoor Shower I bought a couple of 8' sections of Yellowstone fence along with a Yellowstone gate in order to build an outdoor shower. It's a great product that can be easily cut down in order properly size the panels. I have to say, though, that if you're doing a similar installation by your self - grow an extra hand - you'll need one as it's tough to line everything as the parts are being put together. A couple of tips: have a ratchet strap on hand. It'll act like a clamp and it'll help you draw the sections together. Also, keep a can of silicone spray handy. It'll also help with assembly. Short of that, ask a friend for help.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from looks nice when done but alot of custom assembly many trips back to store for missing parts i am a seasoned contractor working with a 4 man crew. 5 of these gates took 2.5 days to install an more that 10 trips back to home depot for missing parts and the wrong products ordered. the post sleaves made for this fence have the wrong size holes in the wrong locations the hardware kits are different and missing parts screws caps latches. i have used other veranda products and have had the same type of issues in the past from now on im going to sty away from veranda products. the gates are solid when assembled correctly but the aluminum sleved posts bend enough to allow the gate to sag far too much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice gate, but truly DIY! When the gate showed up in a 5 foot long tube-like bundle I thought I must have been shipped the wrong item - no way was this a 4x6 foot gate! Opened it up to find all the pieces and a quite complicated puzzle, but in the end it was indeed a complete gate. Between the two of us, we got it together and hung and are very happy with the finished product. However, buyers beware! This requires lots of assembly and having a drill bit capable of going through metal will make your life a LOT easier. Also, this does not include the gate latch, only the hinges! I suspect all the gate kits online are this same configuration. I thought it pricey but it was the only way we could get a matching gate to our existing vinyl fence without having to hire a fence contractor (at their crazy fees!) And it did arrive within the time frame specified when we bought it. All in all, we are satisfied.
