Tap and Hex Die Set (40-Piece) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Basic tap and die set There are not many times a homeowner will need a tap and die set but it is something everyone should have. The Vermont American set is of good quality for occasional use and will easily clean up threads on bolts and threaded holes. I did use this to cut some threads on a piece of rod and it was a struggle, To be fair, I was a machinist for years and can tell you that we never just started using a die to thread material, we usually cut shallow threads on a lathe and than ran the die over to get the right size, so these were no worse than what I used in shops, for this price point it is a good selection and you will be happy

Rated 4 out of 5 by from HANDY ASSORTMENT The Vermont American 40 piece tap and die set is a great complement to any “shade tree” mechanic's tool box. It includes taps and dies for seventeen standard sizes, from 4-40NC to 1/2-20NF, plus 1/8-27NPT as well as the necessary tap and die handles, and even a screw pitch gauge. Keep in mind that this is a “tool steel” set, intended for threading mild steel, aluminum, brass and similar. Don't abuse it and it should serve you well for a long time. Heck of a convenience, when in the middle of a project you come across damaged thread and don't have hunt down a new screw or specific tap size...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice addition to the tool chest! This review is for the Bosch 40 Piece Vermont American Die Set, Model 21729. I was given an opportunity to check out the Vermont American Tap & Hex Die Set. I’m a retired I.T. technician, not a mechanic (although I was, back when cars had distributor points!) so this review comes from the perspective of a home owner DIY. The set contains: 17 taps and dies: 4-40NC, 6-32NC, 8-32NC, 10-24-NC, 12-24NC, 1/4-20NC, 5/16-18NC, 3/8-16NC, 7/16-14NC, 1/2-13NC, 10-32NF, 1/4-28NF, 5/16-24NF, 3/8-24NF, 7/16-20NF, 1/2-20NF, and 1/8-27NPT. Accessories include: 1 tap wrench, 1 die stock, 1 large t-wrench, 1 small t-wrench, 1 screw pitch gauge, and 1 small screwdriver. It all comes in a plastic case that sports a swivel hinge, not one of those “open and close three times and it breaks of plastic fatigue” designs. That’s a thoughtful touch from the designers that I appreciate. The case is secured by two clasps (also plastic). There is no provision for locking the case. The case is larger than I had anticipated (see photos below); it’s over a foot in width. I hadn’t read the dimensions listed (14W x 9.8D x 2.4H) and the unit came via shipper, not an in-store pickup. Good sized tools, easy to grip and work with. The posted specifications claim that “Each plug-style high-carbon steel tap has a recommended drill-bit size laser-marked on the side to take the guesswork out of hole-drilling”, and they are right, but you have to have good eyes or a magnifying glass to see the letters on the smaller taps. It’s a thoughtful feature, tho, and a welcome one. The dies are also marked with size, and an indication of which side goes toward the work. Not having any stripped bolts or holes that needed fixing on jobs under progress, and not willing to wait until I broke or stripped something until I could test the kit out, I rounded up a couple of used bolts that had seen better days out of my scrap bin and found that the new Vermont American tools did an excellent job of re-threading. Of course the tools are new so the things are out-of-the-box sharp but I see no reason to doubt the longevity of the taps and dies. Fit and finish are top notch and Bosch has very thoughtfully included charts on Decimal/Metric drill size conversion, Tap/Drill sizes, a handy instruction sheet on how to use the tools and, inside the lid of the case, a decal showing the intended location of each tool in the case. I found this last to be more important than I first thought – if you remove the sheets of instructions, the charts, and a foam packing sheet and then close the case and turn it on its side or upside down the smaller taps come out of their intended “beds” in the case. If the molding of the case could have been just a bit more precise, the tools might stay in place no matter the orientation of the case. However, having once been bitten by this particular bug I’ve retained the foam packing insert and will keep that in the case to help secure the taps in place. The tools are a bit stiff to use – the “T” handles don’t slide without a bit of effort. However, I think this is normal “wear in”. It’s a metal-against-metal tool and time and a drop of 3-in-1 oil will take care of any initial balkiness. This is a very nice set, and I would be pleased to have had it “back in the day” when I made my living wrenching on cars. As it is I’ll feel fortunate to have it in my basement shop for those “oh, good grief!!” moments when I strip out a bolt or threaded hole. The market price seems to be comparable to the competition, the quality of the tools is excellent, and the lifetime warranty is hard to beat. In addition to the lifetime warranty by Bosch, there is also the 90 return guarantee offered by Home Depot. Even with the smaller bits coming out of their ‘beds’ when the case is roughly handled I see no reason not to give this kit five stars. The usual tap/die caveats apply – always wear eye protection, and a good cutting oil is highly recommended for some applications. Recommendations may be found on the “how to use” sheet included in the kit. HTH Regards, Jim
