This sturdy digger went into the ground great! I'm a middle-age petite Georgia lady, so I was looking for something helpful when planting my 3 dozen daffodil bulbs this fall. It was effortless, I just stepped on the bar, did a little stomp & twist, and it made a beautiful 4" hole. I dropped in my bulb, and then...that's when the problem became apparent. I stepped on the bar to release the clump of dirt, but it wouldn't budge out of the cylinder. I tapped it, kicked it, knocked it on the ground, my husband even tried...finally dug out the compacted dirt with a skinny little trowel. The same thing happened with the next bulb hold I dug. So I refused to try a third time, insane. I finished planting the remaining 34 bulbs with my trusty dollar store planter.
In the tool's defense, I am digging in heavy Georgia clay. So it probably will do a nice job in soft fluffy dirt.

I have really been missing gardening, following two hip replacements. I can't bend the way I used to do. I needed to find something that would make it easier for me to dig small holes in my solid clay soil to plant annuals. This is perfect for that! Another reviewer had suggested you water well the day before you wanted to dig and plant. I did, and this product worked great. I stepped on the digger, pulled out the clay plug, placed the annual in the hole, and filled it up with soft enriched potting soil. I had to keep a kitchen knife next to my soil bucket, so that I could remove the 5 inch clay plug of soil from the digger. That approach worked well and it didnt take long at all to get everything planted. It was easy to clean up too.
