Answer:
I am not sure if it is better. Pumice provides so much to the soil aside from being light weight, providing aeration and fast drain qualities. I do know pumice is cheaper. Who wants heavy soil? I did use pea gravel and switched for the above reasons.

Answer:
It is much much better than pumice. Doesn't float, adds a little weight to mix.

Answer:
It depends on your use. I used it in about 6 large plant posts (I only had one pack). I also used it as a base for rooting, about 2 inches deep in a 12"x24" tray.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good multi-use product I used this three different ways. In a small hydroponic system, as a base for drainage and to root some plants. I really like it. It is a clay product but very light and easy to wash off to clean. It worked very well in the plant pots as a base for drainage. It also retained water so it seemed that I didn't have to water as frequently. It was also lighter than the rocks I have been using so the big pots were easy to mover. I really liked it as a rooting material as it held the stems straight and made transplanting into they hydroponic system easier as I didn't have to wash off the dirt. You can't go wrong with this product. June 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Rocks are hard to find !!! This was the first time I used a hydroponic system. ( see Illustration below) I made it out of Home Depot buckets, old storage containers and a piece of 4 inch PVC I had laying around. I soaked the rocks overnight and rinsed them good before use So far I have been having great results, My plants rooted well and the rocks seem to hold a lot of liquid. I have the pump on a timer so it fills up the cups every hour. It seems to be working very well for me and the grow rocks seem very capable of doing their job. It was a fun project and I may order more of these so i can build an indoor garden in a limited space so I can have fresh tomatos all year. August 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Viastone Growing Rock I used these growing rock stones a bit differently. I am building a patio and wanted a center space for my day lilies to grow in and also wanted to make it stand out and become a focus. The patio is not completed yet but I have the basic foundation started and the area made for my day lilies. I like the idea of a natural growth medium and these stones are just want I wanted to help with root transplantation and growth. I definitely recommend using these. July 24, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not Sure about Product To Date I have put this product around some of my plants and am waiting to see how it goes. It appears as if it is a good product but I have not had enough time to evaluate it to date. In the future I can come back and write a full review to allow readers the benefit of my experience. If anyone else has used it maybe they can give me and other feedback on how it does. February 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by floats and lots of broke up peices This stuff floats and alot of the pieces are all broke up and very' small. Was going to use this in a aquaponic setup but after all the floating that was a no, the little pieces didn't help much either. December 29, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty Effective Growing Medium I've worked with expanded clay growing mediums before with some success. This one seems to be of a little better quality. The great thing about this medium is the aeration in the pot for your plant. Water has no issue flowing through the bottom, making for a great path for oxygen to flush through with the waterings. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great gardening medium I have used this medium to replace the bark in my orchids. I have over 100 plants and this makes it easy to repot my plants. They look better than before. June 25, 2015
