Answer:
Absolutely, though the buckets are black and you will want to protect them from the sun. A can of white spray paint will work wonders, just be sure not to get any paint inside the "root area".

Answer:
I don't think it was made for that purpose. But they are essentially plastic paint buckets and similar plastic pieces with plastic tubing. The plastics would break down faster from any direct sun's rays, so I wouldn't expect you would keep it functional for more than 2 seasons. That said, I think it could be used outside with that in mind.

Answer:
You would have extra net pots. Sometimes when the roots grow through them, the pot is damaged and cannot be reused. So you have extras for the next run.

Deep Water Culture Hydroponic Systems are very effective and reasonably priced hydroponic systems. They are designed around the principle that roots can be submerged under water as long as that water is highly oxygenated. The ideal water level in a Deep Water Culture system will vary with the size of the root mass of the plant in the system. When the plant is young with a small root system, the water level should be high enough that it covers about 1" of the bottom of the net pot. As the plant roots grow down into the oxygenated mixture of water and fertilizer, the water level should be adjusted about 1-2" per week until the water level in the bucket is between half and two-thirds full. This is where the water level should remain for the rest of the growing cycle. Read Less

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome for the price! Works Great, Easy Setup! I was pleased to see that they included the media, 10 starter plugs, pH kit, 2 large pumps, air tubing, air stones, everything you need to get started except nutrients and overhead lighting. Ordering online was easy and was shipped to my door within 4 business days, much quicker than estimated arrival. But, was especially pleased that even though instructions show I must assemble and install grommets and tubing for each bucket, this was already pre-done for me, making setup a breeze! Great kit for the price! I'm not sure what other people were not happy with. I couldn't be more pleased. A custom system to duplicate this would cost at least 50% more to piece out. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Viagrow 5gallon deep water system is not worth it at all This system is a. Basic as possible my order was missing the instructions and doesn't even have all the hoses this is the worst possible most expensive system I am very disappointed that I spent all my money on. This junk August 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by the pricing on the buckets is unbeatable The product is available online only which is not good . But with a little time it is a better deal than any other store. The product is the cheapest on the market. Overall it is unbeatable for all the equipment n the easy to use setup. Order yours ahead of time cause there will be a shortage as soon as people start to find out. None of the competitors have what homedepot has to offer and for the dollar bang you will not receive a bigger deal. March 27, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk Save your money for a high quality aeroponic system, a custom aeroponics system will perform better and you won't end up with dead nasty plants. February 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A good hard-working and fast growing This system works amazing I love how fast roots grow very strong healthy plants when you do it right as far as Water-level keep it Touching Net-pot till you see roots the you can let it fall a little May 9, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not worth the money Valves don't close completely. No instructions on how the system should be used. (I.e. what levels the resevoirs need to be, weather the valves should be closed/open) I wouldn't recommend this product. May 23, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My tomatoes are going crazy! Way better than soil! The instructions were easy to read and included pictures and installation was a snap. I would recommend this for the city grower or patio grower since the system does not use soil! June 11, 2012
