Like the new size of the bags, make them easier to handle. I've bought about 40 bags this year and will buy more as I continue to landscape my back yard.

We decided in June to beat the drought and remove lawn with water free lava rock. We purchased about 60 bags of Vigoro Red Lava Rock that covered well with no problems. Today, October 7, 2015 I purchased another 15 bags to fill in some empty places. These bags were very poor in quality with 25%, or more filled with lava sand and not rock. Needless to say, the quality of this product has declined. We will not purchase any more Vigoro Lava Rock in the future. The enclosed photo will clearly show how this lava sand is in this material. Each photo is one full bag and the squared off area will indicate the lava sand therein.

Well , I was going to by $100 worth of rocks, but these reviews changed my mind. I did buy some rocks about 4 years ago around $3.00 per bag. I was very pleased. This was for one big flower bed. They are still good today. then about two years ago, I purchased about three bags that were of poor quality. I was not happy. I was going to purchase some more today for another big flowerbed, hoping they had improved. But after reading this, I have changed my mind. Thank-you for the input. Also in South Carolina ,the price is now $4.63. Also the rocks I purchased 4 years ago work great on keeping the weeds out or from sprouting. I do not like mulch, because of termite problems.

I needed something to cover the area around my pecan tree, I had mulch there, but the problem was I had to put it down every summer. Decided I wanted rock, went to Home Depot and found the Lava rock, as you can see it's a large area used 42 bags (do the math) more bags then stated, but I love it!. Oh that's a BB gun(grandsons).

You better set aside some extra funds for your project because this stuff does not cover like you would expect. I originally bought rock from another hardware store & the rock was great, but thought the bag size was small. I needed about 4 more bags, so I thought I'd try this brand of lava rock. While the bags were larger, the rock was small and covered poorly. Because of the quantity of small marble-size rock, I suspect I'll need to buy more next year. I suggest you find another brand or be VERY selective about the bags you choose.

Not sure how to rate this, numerically speaking. Just know what you are buying - for sure. Also, you better set aside some extra funds for your project because this stuff does not cover like you would expect. I noticed at the store that the bags are ALL different, different colors of red, some were pink. I bought 5 bags thinking I could cover some good ground with it. Not the case. The photo I am attaching is FIVE bags! 5 of them! And the area as you can see is quite small, even with that, you can still see the landscaping fabric I laid underneath it. One of the bags I bought wasn't even all lava. I am not sure what it was, some of it looked like they broke up some of those terra cotta clay pots and threw it in there. Not kidding.
