Answer:
This rubber mulch is more like an irregular nugget shape. There are various sizes and shapes of pieces. The edges of each "nugget" are slightly ragged. Actually it is more like mildly shredded pieces. It is NOT like shredded bark/wood mulch. I included a couple of photos. Hope this helps!

I'd say more nugget kind. Go to Home Depot and look at the size if you have a concern. It stays down in high winds. Best Product I've "ever" used in all my landscape projects. Its worth the extra money up front that you spend.

I think that would be a good idea, regardless of the mulch you use. I used this mulch around a swing set, so I did not lay a weed barrier first. I do get weeds growing up through it that I have to spray. You probably will avoid that if you use a weed barrier.

Answer:
You can lay landscaping fabric if you want, but it is not required. If you put the mulch thick enough, nothing will grow from below. You might, however, want to sprinkle some Preen before you mulch to prevent new weeds from germinating from any seeds that get in them.

Yes, I would advise to put down landscape fabric. The rubber mulch does not promote weed growth like the wood chip based mulch, but weeds can still grow. I put down fabric and have very few weeds coming through

That would be a personal preference on your part. If you put the mulch down thick enough it will keep the weeds from growing. I have found the fabric usually works it way to the top and looks ugly once it is exposed.

Yes, it is advisable to install weed barrier/landscape fabric first, then apply the rubber mulch on top. I did this on all of my flower beds and around my bushes! No weed problems after 2 years.

Smells like rubber when you open the bag (made from rubber tires). The rubber smell dissipates quickly when applied, leaving no odor, even when wet.

When you first open bag it does. But it is not strong and in a few days it lessens. Over a year ago, I put this around all my bushes and plants covering the entire front of my house and have no problem with any rubber smell. I have a huge hibiscus bush and Crepe Myrtle "bed' that I put this on this year and it looks great, no strong smell and extremely functional.

Only when you first open the bag it may have a slight smell. I used gloves to place the product as it comes in different colors, and didn't want to stain my nails. So easy to put down. I don't find that it smells being it's outside. Love the product, will purchase more for another project.

Answer:
No, you don't need to put new rubber mulch down each year. It is made from recycled rubber tires and its guaranteed for 20 or so years. It stays put, does not wash out with rain and lasts great through snow, color doesn't fade. Mine has been down for two years. Looks good as new.

You should not have to add new mulch each year. This stuff is very durable and should last for years. It is also very resistant to the wind. The snow does not seem to affect it at all. I have had mine down for two years now and it still looks new, I don't think it has faded at all. I love this stuff!

I am on the second year with this rubber mulch and didn't have to replace any. Actually, I created another large bush/flower bed a few weeks ago and used this mulch I like it so well! I am in Georgia, only experienced light snow this past winter, so I can't comment on how it lasts in a heavy snow area. But mine has done great! No color fade with the hot Georgia sun and heavy rainfall this past year.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really, Really, Really Nice Product The product was just what I needed to cover various areas around my house. The color and consistency of the mulch is perfect and it is very easy to spread. I have attached one of the many photos taken at the completion of the project. August 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stuff! I raked out the bigger pieces of old hardwood mulch already in my beds and then spread this stuff. If the mulch is close in color to the old stuff you're replacing, you can go pretty light with the coverage. Each bag only covers .8cu ft., but I don't think I have even a 2" depth on average. The pieces are smaller than regular mulch and so far at least 2 of my neighbors are going to use it as well after seeing mine. The big bonus is looking at how nice this is and thinking about how many tires are NOT in a landfill now! And don't worry, almost zero odor and I have a sensitive sniffer. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the Rubber Mulch from Home Depot I have used the Mocha Brown Rubber Mulch before and love it. Soft to the bare feet and stays in place. Performs as expected. In the photo, I used the Mocha Brown Rubber Mulch in front of a Tiny House that was built from an old oak 8'x8' chicken house. The Mocha Brown Rubber Mulch is perfect around the fire pit! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth every penny We just finished landscaping our yard and decided instead of buying wood mulch we'd spend the extra money up front on rubber mulch. We looked at several brands and the Vigaro was just as good quality and color as the others but much less expensive. We ordered 60 bags online and they had them set apart on a pallet for us when we went to pick up our order. They just fork-lifted the whole pallet into the bed of our pickup. This mulch is very good quality. We didn't find any metal at all. There are a few "fuzzy" pieces but they just blend in. It's nice and heavy and weathered the recent rain without moving an inch. March 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great alternative to rock We were landscaping our vacation home and I wasn't looking forward to working with landscape rock. It's expensive and heavy, although it does look great. Rubber mulch was the perfect alternative. A bag covers a lot more than a bag of river rock and, in the end, the look is comparable to rock. The solid brown color looks much better than wood mulch yet it is as light and easy to spread as wood mulch. We've had it down for about four months and it isn't showing any signs of fading. It still looks fantastic. We will be using rubber mulch for all of our future landscape projects. Highly recommend. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product I have been using rubber mulch for over 10 years and it keeps its color and is easy to walk on August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Rubber Mulch I Have Used This stuff works great and unlike past rubber mulch, it doesn't float away. This is basically shredded tires and works very well at retaining moisture in the soil. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kids playground Bought this product for the base area around my children's wooden playground. If you have ever shopped around for rubberized mulch you know it can be quite expensive. I saved a ton of money and it is actually softer than most of the other products I looked at. July 26, 2016
