The past two years my plants have been so badly burned by MG products I won't ever go back. Vigoro 1.25 CF Potting Mix was less expensive, looked OK, seems to be owned by HD and I generally trust the company. But this potting soil is junk. Literally. I have potted four small plants from this bag, and with each one I have had to pick out pieces of trash - black electrician's tape, broken plastic clothing hangers and toy parts. In addition to the rubbish this stuff is full of sticks - as someone else mentioned. The time, frustration and pure yuck factor involved in hand-straining the garbage out of my bag of Vigoro potting soil completely negated the "value" for me. On to the next brand...

I bought this product previously for some planters that I had last year and liked the quality of the soil; it was dark and rich and drained fairly well. This year I bought some more for a new pot, and this bag was very different. The dirt was light colored like regular potting soil, and it had lots of sticks and some plastic bits and other things in it. The soil didn't drain that well at all. So my verdict on this is mixed. I bought a bag of the Kellogg Patio Plus potting mix and liked that better.

This year i'm starting a lot of peppers to be transplanted in the garden. My first purchase for soil was Miracle Grow Organic Potting Soil. This was terrible. Low PH, burning, etc, etc. After ruling out my personal error i went back to Home Depot and got the Vigoro mix. I see the reviews of twigs and garbage. I found no garbage. There are twigs, but not enough of them to make it a problem. The plants in the Vigoro are doing great. Green and growing strong with little to no special care. I added a little extra perilite and 25% strength fertilizer mix when watering.
I'd recommend this to anyone. No problems here.

Lesson on getting what you pay for. Besides the sticks you need to remove before using, your plants/flower beds will then sprout grasses and mushrooms. Now I have to weed my flower pots. Should have stuck with the more expensive brand. A few more dollars for the other is worth not having to spend the extra time dealing with this.

As a horticulturist, I would prefer a bit more perlite, but overall it isn't a bad potting soil. Tends to hold water a lot better than Miracle Grow's and doesn't dry out as fast as MG's. Best "cheap" potting mix I have found.
