Customer Questions & Answers

Does Vigoro grass seed need to be covered?

I am overseeding my lawn and used several bags of Vigoro grass seed a few days ago. I noticed in the directions there's no mention of covering the seed with dirt or mulch after planting. I've read some articles that say it should be covered and some that don't. Is Vigoro seed different from other brands? Will the seeds germinate this way? Thanks.
Asked by: steve
I rented a spreader and covered the whole area with steer manure to keep the birds away and the manure adds nutrients to the soil. You probably do not even need fertilizer.

Does Tall Fescue Grow In The Winter?

Asked by: Jay
Not much if you have real winter. Soil temperature needs to be constantly over 40 degrees.

20 lb. Grass Tall Fescue Seed is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grassias! I used these seeds for my yard last summer and, as pointed by another reviewer, they need quite a bit of water. But it is well worth it: after a rather slow start, those tall fescue shoots finally came out and nicely ended up conquering my yard. Once established, it is a rather tolerant type of grass, especially for the Northerners enjoying the cooler climate. As with many products from Vigoro, this bag of seeds is competitively priced. I would definitively recommend this product,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good grass needs a lot of water Grass is soft and thin, but looks great. Wish i would have used 2 bags. Till the soil, spread WAY MORE SEED than you think you need, top with soil, Topper red and yellow bag, was my choice, then pack down, and water TWICE daily. Hope the birds dont find your seeds. But GREAT Seed overall. I need another bag for the thin spots. Some bits are yellowish but overall good stuff. Bottom Line: BUY TWO BAGS. I wish did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good seed Great germination, tilled up my entire front yard, added new soil, watered 2-3 times a day, temps were high 70's to mid 80's, took right at one month to fill in 90%, just gotta reseed some bare spots

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vigoro Fescue with RTF Self Repairing Seed Could be a True Lawn Game Changer I was born, raised and farmed in Iowa (back in the day.) Every lawn was Kentucky bluegrass growing in practically perfect soil. However, I have lived in suburban Northern Virginia for the past twenty-eight years and can tell you that lawn maintenance is a completely different animal. My soil is Wheaton-Glenelg complex with emphasis on Wheaton which is loamy soil consisting of sand, silt and clay. I have the developers from decades ago to thank for that mess. Fescue is the lawn of choice for most of Northern Virginia. It holds its green color through the winter unlike Bermuda that browns down at the first hint of frost and is the last to turn green in the spring. The primary reason I chose Vigoro Tall Fescue is that is supposed to “Fill and Repair Bare Spots.” That is exactly what Kentucky bluegrass has done for generations of cool season lawns. Fescue is more of a clumping grass than a turf grass. Historically, it will not spread at all. The edges of a fescue clump usually develop broad blades that grow outward and can make bare spots less obvious, but it doesn’t really spread. However, this Vigoro blend contains six tall fescue varieties, three of which are advertised as “RTF.” (Seed label picture below.) RTF is ribosome tall fescue. It is a robust ribosome system that causes bluegrass to spread underground. Bluegrass ribosomes are why we never had to overseed our lawns in Iowa. Fescue ribosomes are ordinarily tiny and not capable of underground spreading. That is why in Virginia a serious fescue lawn requires annual overseeding and substantial effort to fix bare spots. RTF self-repairing fescue grass should be a true game changer for my lawn and maybe for the industry. It will take perhaps two years to fully determine if the RTF varieties are really as good as I hope they will be. I can tell you that the germination of the blend is excellent, as you can see in the attached picture. I tilled a strip of soil, to a depth of about three inches and liberally seeded it and lightly raked it in. I covered with straw to conserve moisture and was lucky enough to get some rain. The directions recommend watering three times a day, but I find that burdensome. I also overseeded the other 6000 square feet of lawn and repaired some bare spots. I use a very old Cyclone Seed Sower shown in one of the pictures crisscrossing the lawn at several angles to insure good coverage. I highly recommend this blend and I am looking forward to a great looking lawn that doesn’t require annual overseeding.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Impressed I have given this seed a week more than the label said it takes for the seeds to germinate and start growing. Only about 1/4 of the seeds have started growing. I followed all the directions on the label except for fertilizing which I had done a couple of weeks before planting them, including the bare spots which I was trying to fill in. Either some of the seeds were not good or it might be that the ground is too hard and the seeds can't grow through it. The ground here is pretty hard. I did till one inch of the soil but as I watered it or it rained, the soil kind of packed down again, so that may be the problem. I'll try again in the fall when it cools down some.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Far So Good Waiting for results but I do not see any reason why this seed would not work. I just did my whole back yard. I tilled the soil to about 1 to 1-1/2 in. deep removing all the old grass and weeds. I then leveled the soil then packed it down with a water roller so when the new grass grows there are no hills and valleys. Now I used number 5 on my hand spreader to put down the seed then number 4 to lay down the starter fertilizer on top of the seed then I used a wheeled spreader to cover the whole area with steer manure to keep the birds away., I am watering the area twice a day every day for at least 2 weeks to start. There is a large shade tree in my back yard so the total area is only half covered in shade.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hoping for Grass We live in Pennsylvania so I'm not sure if this grass seed is meant for our area or not. However after living in our house for nearly a year we realized that our yard is extremely rocky and hard. Our lawn up till now is nothing to speak of (as you will see in the photos), it seems to be a mixture of a little grass and hard dirt! So we picked an area to begin overseeding with Vigoro hoping that we too can have a beautiful lush lawn! The seed is in and it has been raining straight for the past couple of weeks so we are hopeful to have signs of growth as soon as the sun breaks through! Fingers are crossed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Grass is Greener on the Other side !!!! Excellent product.... I had an area next to my pizza oven where I had wood piled for the longest time. I did a quick cleanup and raking of the area added some top soil mixed it in and raked it out... Im very impressed with this seed,, First time I've ever had real grass growing in less than 5 days.. It came in full and rich.. Just plenty of water not even that much sun.. the spot where its growing only gets about 4-5 hours of sun a day. It also worked great on small areas of lawn that needed patching.. Filling in nice and even with good color. I think its a great product for a very good price.....
