Howdy MW,
The best way to successfully grow seed is:
1) break up the ground with cultivating rake and make sure it has a slanted grade away from home. This is for drainage.
2) spread grass seed with the consistency of a sesame seed bun.
3) cover seed with seeding soil/topper about 1/2-3/8 inch deep.
4) water about 1 minute 2X a day to keep moist. After 10 days you can cut back the watering.
5) do not

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It worked before, not so much this time. I have used this seed several times in the past with good luck so last time I needed seed I bought it again. I used it in several places where I had to make repairs because of grubs, but no luck this time. I know the soil was good because grass that was there and had survived is growing, but the fresh seed did nothing. I will probably but this brand again, because I have had luck with it in the past, I think I may have just gotten an old stock bag this time. July 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked well before so let's try it again I used this grass seed to fill in a spot in the yard where a flower bed had been removed last spring (mid May in northeast Ohio). I didn't lay straw or fertilize but kept up on watering for a few minutes each day if it didn't rain. I kept this up for two weeks and one year later, you can't even tell this portion of the yard was a flower bed two summers ago. This year we're taking out a fire pit and will use this same seed mix to fill it in. June 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Surprisingly good!!! I bought this brand versus a popular "big name." My wife being a green thumb took to turning over the soil and spreading the seeds. Within weeks, maybe 8, we have new growth and I am so impressed that we are going back to grab more bags of the Sun/ Shade mix. (Big project in the backyard) April 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great! Rototilled, added new topsoil and seeded with Vigoro and grads grew in beautifully in matter of a few weeks. May 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as indicated Used this last year and performed as expected. I'm using it again this year for a different patch of my lawn that needs a touch up. March 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing!! Sprouted in only 3 days! This product is nothing short of amazing. In direct sunlight it sprouted in only 3 days! In dappled sunlight it sprouted in 5 days. (The bag estimates 7-12 days). If you need grass fast, look no further. With absolutely no previous lawncare knowledge, this was my first attempt at sowing grass. Nothing was added to the soil, which had been compacted by pet and human traffic for 7 years. I broke it up with a garden claw, chopped it finer and voila! During germination BE SURE TO KEEP THE SOIL MOIST! If it dries, it dies! This review is genuine and unsolicited. June 23, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Check a Scotts bag before you leave store I may be as blind as a bat but I could not find anything telling what spreader setting to use. I believe the bag says something about "following the recommended settings. . . . ." I had to call depot and ask them to check a scotts bag to see what the recommended settings were. Unbelieveable . . . . . September 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great seed! Germinated in 4 days! The grass seed germinated in 4 days. I tried other brands that took at least 2.5 weeks to germinate and then took forever to grow. This product was at full height within 1.5 weeks. June 2, 2015
