Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by CasualGardner Didn't break (yet?) but figuring out setting is a hassle
Unlike most reviews, I was lucky the item hasn't broken yet. I've used it two or three times in moderate size yard.
On the other hand, and unless you purchase Vigoro-brand product, it is difficult to know which setting to use...

This spreader worked fine for the first few times it was used then it crammed up,even when empty. I took it apart to inspect the gears but every thing appeared OK. I believe the problem is the main wheel gear that flexes as the handle is turned and disengages the gears

Product jammed before anything ever came out. Emptied it, cleaned it, retried it. SAME THING.
4 times in a row.
I ground down the rotater on a grinder (trimming 1/4 inch off diameter and 1/8th inch off blade tops) to increase clearances.
As long as I start turning before letting the fertilizer fall into the hole, it will work MOST of the time.
Can't stop cranking or it will jamb again.
Then reaized the tiny propeller inside the trough had ALSO fallen off at some point so I have to shake shake shake the whole unit to ensure content will fall into the hole.
I score LESS than 1
Worst product of ANY TYPE i have ever purchased.
I just hope the Vigaro seeds and fertilizer will work better.
They certainly can't be any worse.

Wish I had read reviews before buying. Why is this still being carried by Home Depot - reviews from 2011 say terrible and apparently the design has not changed.
Similar to others' experience, I went to spread material (pelletized lime in my case) and did so per the directions for bulky pelletized material. Worked for about 10 steps then completely jammed. Emptied hopper and gears still would not engage ever again. Ended up spreading by hand that day. Will upgrade to better rated Scotts - not a bargain for the Vigoro when you get NOTHING but an expensive plastic cup.

This spreader should be taken off of the market. Obviously no testing was done on this. Even a quarter full spreader jams and if you are on your lawn it starts coming out the bottom heavy and burns lawn. I called the company in Wisconsin and they weren't to concerned which should give you an idea of why this product is still being sold.

Total garbage. I wouldn't say it broke the first attempt to use it because it never really worked to begin with.

I can honestly say that I did not have any of the problems that the other folks on here encountered. I have a small yard and didn't want to give up the $30+ dollars for the larger broadcast models. This is my first home as well as my first spreader and the concept seems really simple unless I'm missing something. I used it to spread weed and feed and this little guy did the job great and I had no problems what so ever.

I bought one of these because we have reacently had our backyard clearcut, it needs grass and it's not really a huge yard. I managed to make one single pass across the yard before this item broke. The seed 'flinger' under the hopper is held into place by a plastic piece the pierces the hopper and also spins a small agitator inside the hopper. The agitator piece snapper off inside the hopper, leaving only the tiniest piece of plastic to hold the flinger in place. Now off center, the flinger made some awful noise and barely flung seed. I took this spreader back and upgraded from the $10 dollar seed spreader to the $13 dollar seed spreader. Apparently, you can get a much better handheld spreader for an extra $3 (the Scotts Model 71133)
