Can I use for fir trees?

Asked by: Dave
Dave, Yes you can, but Home Depot also carries Vigoro Evergreen and Holly Fertilizer spikes at the same count and the same price which might be better for firs (Evergreens). So if you've already bought the others, it's likely that they will do some good and no harm. If you still have the choice, try these. Evergreens tend to like soil that is more acidic. Maybe that's why Vigoro offers more than one kind of spike. Follow the recommendations for application included. Also, I've seen many comments on how easy it is to break fertilizer spikes. If your soil is too firm, take your drill and a 1.5" spade bit along and you can just drop in and cover the spikes with no grunt work or frustration. Happy Gardening!

Customer Reviews

Tree and Shrub Fertilizer Spikes (15-Count) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Make sure you have the right product for your trees and shrubs The quality and value of this product is very good. However you should be cautious about matching the right fertilizer to the right tree. This product even though flowering shrubs are pictured on the cover is not the right product for flowering trees, fruit and nut trees or flowering shrubs. It has too much nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers, blossoms fruit and nut production. Look for a product that specifically says fruit or flowering trees. One that has a high phosphorus count than nitrogen. Vigoro has a product specifically for flowering trees, so make sure you are matching the right fertilizer to the right tree.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard to use, don't hold up to hammering into the soil The spikes would not go into the ground very easily. In most all cases, pieces broke off the spike or it split after it went in to a depth of about 1.4 inches. Only two plastic caps included with twelve spikes. The caps would not last for more than two spikes. If it were early spring and the ground soggy, this might be different, but these are not a good choice for fall fertilizing. I had to use an auger to dig holes into which I could place the spikes. A little early to tell if they have any effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick, Efficient and Easy to use. These Fertilizer Spikes are the only fertilizer I have used for years. They are quick, have all the nutrients your plants need and if you put them in right after watering they are so easy to use. I do select my specific for the type of plant I need it for. Such as Palm, Rose or general shrub.
