This product will help with blooms, by promoting a healthy plant overall. If you're trying to tweak just the flowering, a product with less nitrogen and more phosphorus would be better. Home Depot sells a vast range of fertilizers and soil amendments by Vigoro and Jobes, among others. A good philosophy is to enhance the soil, not the plant. There are cheap kits to tell you what your soil is lacking, if anything.
I've also seen advice on driving (easily breakable) plant stakes. If done in Spring or Fall as recommended, the soil is wetter and softer. Take the work out of this issue...chuck a 1.5 inch spade bit into your cordless drill and have at it. Happy Gardening! Read Less

Answer:
I believe the reason for the distance is so that rain fall will reach the spikes, and that the spikes aren't too close to the roots. So, I think its a judgement call in terms of how far away you can place them e.g. 10 inches OK, 2 inches too close.

Dave, Yes you can, but Home Depot also carries Vigoro Evergreen and Holly Fertilizer spikes at the same count and the same price which might be better for firs (Evergreens). So if you've already bought the others, it's likely that they will do some good and no harm. If you still have the choice, try these. Evergreens tend to like soil that is more acidic. Maybe that's why Vigoro offers more than one kind of spike. Follow the recommendations for application included. Also, I've seen many comments on how easy it is to break fertilizer spikes. If your soil is too firm, take your drill and a 1.5" spade bit along and you can just drop in and cover the spikes with no grunt work or frustration.

I have, and not noticed any adverse effect. While not a tree/garden specialist I think the overall goal is to provide fertilizer to the soil for the benefit of the trees.

I haven't found any spikes that are as effective as a liquid fertilizer deep feeder, or something like "Tree Tone" placed into holes dug with an auger around the tree.

I just applied these to my tree with overall success you will need a wooden post to drive a hole into the ground first for make the hole. These little guys overall break if you just drive them into soft ground. As over read it works better on non-flowering plants.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Killed the Grass These are not worth the money. Placed these around my trees and everywhere that I put one the grass has died. There are brown circles now in my yard by all the trees and shrubs. Will not buy again and would not recommend June 1, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Hard to use, don't hold up to hammering into the soil The spikes would not go into the ground very easily. In most all cases, pieces broke off the spike or it split after it went in to a depth of about 1.4 inches. Only two plastic caps included with twelve spikes. The caps would not last for more than two spikes. If it were early spring and the ground soggy, this might be different, but these are not a good choice for fall fertilizing. I had to use an auger to dig holes into which I could place the spikes. A little early to tell if they have any effect. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy feeding... Fertilizer spikes were easy to find. The display was eye-appealing. The price was clearly shown, for choice and comparison. Product was easy to use. Reputable brand name, purchased with confidence. September 6, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It's what my trees and shrubs needed. The ground where I live is so hard I have to pre drill holes to get the fertilizer stakes in the ground to the required depth. There is no product I've found that can handle being driven into the ground in hard pan clay. June 28, 2016
