Answer:
My Vision stone developed cracks after a few uses at <400F - I'm holding it together with pipe clamps. I'd probably bring it to high temp, then let it cool slowly with the cover closed. Yes, pizza's are cooked on the stone. I've done shrimp that way. A minute and a half each side at 350F.

Answer:
I didn't season mine when I first got it. You can do a pizza on it, but I would use a smooth pizza stone on the rack above the stone deflector. A bigger pizza will fit better on the pizza stone anyway. If you haven't used one before, be aware that the grill will take just a little longer to reach your desired temp. But, once it's there, it's awesome! Happy Grilling!

Answer:
Not a replacement. It is a heat diffuser that sits lower to your fire. You could use it as a pizza stone on top of your grate, but I'd probably use it as a diffuser and add a pizza stone on top of grate.
Its primary purpose is for indirect cooking, especially needed for long cooks and smoking.

Answer:
The Lava Stone should be used with the cooking grate. Used as a heat deflector, it sits below the main cooking grate. When using as a cooking stone, you can sit it directly on the grate.

Answer:
It can be used either way. I grill shrimp directly on the stone and smoke pork butt, on the top grate, above the stone. A pan of water is on the lower grate. The stone helps keep the heat low & slow for smoking. BTW - they can crack easily - I have hose clamps around the outside to hold it together.

Answer:
Flipping the Lava Stone after every use will allow the grill to burn off any drippings from the previous cook. If you decide to use a brush, be sure that you DO NOT use any chemicals, or even soap. The porous nature of the stone will allow absorption of these unsavory flavors and affect your food.

I purchased my stone this past June, and I have never dropped it but it has broken in 3 pieces now. I would hope that something I paid $54 for would last for at least a year, if not longer. Would Home Depot replace it if brought it back?

In reply to THD Support answer, this was an online purchase. It had nothing to do with a local purchase, so me contacting the department expert at my local location would not be helpful if it was not a local purchase. My order number is W283418554 to show proof of my transaction. If I would have purchased it locally then I would have just went back to the store. Please advise again.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Cracked Lava Stones If the stone cracks go to Home Depot and get two #104 SS clamps 5" to 7" diameter. Unscrew each one, then connect them end to end to form a circle. Clamp them lightly, just enough to hold the pieces in place, around the stone. - Or do as I did and clamp it before it cracks :-) July 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Heat Deflector design While I really do love my Vision grill and cook on it quite a lot, the design of the "lava" rock heat deflector is terrible. It breaks REAL easy! I have had replace it twice and Vision would not replace it. Vision only warranties it for 90 days so they know it is a deflect. They should make it out of another material that is not porous and acceptable to breaking very easy. It will break at the slightest touch after you use it several times. The grill is fantastic but has a Achilles heal! I have been looking for a pizza stone to replace it with but no luck so far to find the right size............ September 1, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Necessary accessory for vision cooker The lava stone is nice and a good addition if you need indirect cooking. And unless you sear everything, you need indirect cooking. Honestly, it's a bit expensive for what you get, a think stone that should last a lifetime but the two braces that might not last. I would have been satisfied with the just the two braces being sold separately and using a round cast iron griddle of my own. As this braces might need replacing over time anyway, I'd prefer being able to buy them separately. The large diameter of the stone forbids tending to your fire during your cook if you need to. You will have to remove your food, grate, and stone just to add wood chips if needed. Then you'd have to put it all back again. Meanwhile, your fire gets unlimited oxygen during this time. It's a recipe for disaster for a long cook. Using my smaller cast iron griddle allowed for adding at least some wood during a long cook. Perhaps the larger diameter is necessary for a proper convection effect but I haven't noticed this. September 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lava cooking stone I like it, it kept the meat/shrimp from getting burnt. September 27, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A must for smoking meats, but...... The lava stone is a must if you do any low and slow cooking with your kamado. That said, as other reviews have noted, this stone will crack. My first one formed a crack at year one and then collapsed into three pieces. It's important to let it cool with the grill so it's not subject to dramatic temperature swings. You can season both sides with a coating of virgin olive oil prior to its first use. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for its propensity to crack. Still, I've made many great meals with this product. I just hope this stone lasts longer. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great Haven't used it for anything but heat deflector yet. I am wanting to cook pizza on it soon. Heavy and durable. September 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap metal Metal bracket is bent and warped after one use. Needs to be made of material that can stand the heat. September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Grill stone replaced Kinda pricey, but free shipping helped a lot. Arrived very fast and in good condition. September 6, 2016
