Answer:
According to the author of "Scroll Saw Workbook," (3rd addition by John A. Nelson) with the right blades, scroll saws can be used to cut metal, glass, and plastic as well as wood. Many manufacturers do make special blades designed for these other materials, it just takes a little research to find them.

Answer:
Depends more on the speed you chose, quality, thickness and type of blade. Your personal dexterity would also be a factor. For coins I would recommend a jewelers hand saw.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 33 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great saw at a great price! Very impressed with this saw.. Just received it UPS today, To replace my 16 inch RYOBI.. took it out of the box.. very sturdy and well built scroll saw. The Light is very bright and stays where you put it.. The Air Blower could use a little better pump but pumps more air at high speed...this is my third scroll saw in 16 inch and its definitely the quietest by far.. even at high speeds if mounted on a rig its extremely quiet. Pinned blades are a breeze to change even with the small allen key it comes with but if your doing small intricate scroll and fretwork pinless is the only way to go..BUT. they are a pain in the butt.. You have to tighten them very well to keep from slipping blades.. and the allen key could have been about 3 inches longer and with a T handle to make things easier to work with. especially on the bottom blade lock. Table was not set up 90 degrees to blade out of box but was very close to being accurate when set to 0 on the table lock. Comes with 3 blades, one installed. immediately replaced with better blades. supplied blades are ok for rough cutting thicker wood or outer perimeter projects... Really liked the ability to cut 2 inch blocks.. Has a nice little storage compartment on the side for extra blades and allen keys..Table plate is nice and flush with table. The blade tensioner works well but would prefer it on top front instead of rear. With a premium blade this thing makes beautiful cuts and does the job of higher end models for a great price. I also have a 20 inch dewalt for larger projects and this saw works JUST as well but smaller and ALOT quieter. I got this saw this morning and within 30 minutes of tweaking and setting it up i had made my first small project for my wife... My wife was diagnosed with two types of cancer two years ago and after many months of chemo and radiation treatments,TODAY of all days she got the call that she was cancer free and in remmission. So i made her the most fitting project i could think of. Over all the only complaint i have with this saw is the small allen key it comes with to change blades with. Add a 4 inch T handled allen key and it would be the perfect small project saw at an unbelievable price.. Granted i have only had it one day, i highly recommend and LOVE this saw!!! Pictures included of my first project and saw. GREAT JOB on this saw WEN! I will definately be ordering the 6 inch disc and belt sander at another great price!! June 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by First time with this product ... I like the scroll saw I got, I didn't really care for the pin less blades that came with it but like the saw very well .. July 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Well built, easy to use The scroll saw is easy to set up. Don't forget to hook up the hose from the bellows to the nozzle. The saw works well with pinned blades but I have had no luck with pinless. The speed control works well as do all teh adjustments. August 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not for me I am 79yrs. old changing the blades was too hard for me to handle. So I had to return it. Price was the best I could find anywhere; however this scroll saw was not for me. Had no problem with the return. July 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Update My review of 4/30/16 Not a scroller really but I have had a chance to use this saw. Got my shed and got my shop together. I like it less today than when I got it. It still is a great deal for the money. For me I think I would have been happier if I went up a couple price points. My issues are, It still really vibrates which makes it real tough to saw. The dust port being in the front of course right where you have to stand. That is a real issue since I run a vac on every machine when I use them because I have a window AC unit and sawdust is a real issue so I have to keep it clean. I can't put the vac hose on this and work too. I have tried skill, bosch, and olson blades all tpi's and types and regardless this will barely cut 1/4 pine craft wood. I tried reverse blades, skip tooth and regular but it just does not seem like it wants to cut. I put a 1/8" blade on my band saw and I have used that instead of the scroll saw. Not sure if there is something wrong with it. I guess I will call Wen and see what they say. I have tightened the blade correctly, trued the table, tried it at every speed and it acts like the blade has no teeth. Yes, I have the blade installed correctly with teeth facing down. I watch youtube video of others cutting on their saws and this one is like cutting in reverse. August 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good scroll saw Easy to use, little difficult to change blades. I don't have much experience with scroll saws but this one seems pretty good to me! Also a good price. July 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Truckster2 So far this scroll saw has worked just fine for me. I had to adjust the table when I first got the saw because it wasn't exactly 90• but close. The light vibrated so much when using the saw that it was unuseable. I taped it to the arm and that fixed that problem. I tried the unpined blade and it held just fine. It would be easier to change blades if they gave a T-wrench instead of an Allen wrench for that, but I could go buy a T-wrench. I did buy new blades because the three blades that came with it usually are of poorer quality. I have cut both hardwoods and softwoods with no problem, but it cuts best at a higher speed which is typical of any saw. My goal was to save a buck and be able to saw intricate items and so far this saw has done the job with no problems with the saw breaking down. I will have to see how it goes as time goes by. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Not a bad saw for the price! This saw is almost exactly the same as several other brands out there, Ryobi, Skill, Craftsman to name a few. This one however comes with a light, and a few $$ cheaper. The light is a great detail. I only wish it had a separate on/off switch. Its very hard to change the blade in the dark! It does lack the tool less blade change that the Ryobi has. I suspect that one could order the blade change bolt from Ryobi and swap it in if one was so inclined. The instructions say it will accept pinned and pinless blades, and even comes with a pinless blade, however for the life of me I cannot get one to stay in. I tried to the point of frustration and switched it over to a pinned blade so I could finish my project. All in all it seems to be a great little saw at a great price. September 8, 2015
