Answer:
According to the author of "Scroll Saw Workbook," (3rd addition by John A. Nelson) with the right blades, scroll saws can be used to cut metal, glass, and plastic as well as wood. Many manufacturers do make special blades designed for these other materials, it just takes a little research to find them.

Answer:
Depends more on the speed you chose, quality, thickness and type of blade. Your personal dexterity would also be a factor. For coins I would recommend a jewelers hand saw.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 29 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great saw at a great price! Very impressed with this saw.. Just received it UPS today, To replace my 16 inch RYOBI.. took it out of the box.. very sturdy and well built scroll saw. The Light is very bright and stays where you put it.. The Air Blower could use a little better pump but pumps more air at high speed...this is my third scroll saw in 16 inch and its definitely the quietest by far.. even at high speeds if mounted on a rig its extremely quiet. Pinned blades are a breeze to change even with the small allen key it comes with but if your doing small intricate scroll and fretwork pinless is the only way to go..BUT. they are a pain in the butt.. You have to tighten them very well to keep from slipping blades.. and the allen key could have been about 3 inches longer and with a T handle to make things easier to work with. especially on the bottom blade lock. Table was not set up 90 degrees to blade out of box but was very close to being accurate when set to 0 on the table lock. Comes with 3 blades, one installed. immediately replaced with better blades. supplied blades are ok for rough cutting thicker wood or outer perimeter projects... Really liked the ability to cut 2 inch blocks.. Has a nice little storage compartment on the side for extra blades and allen keys..Table plate is nice and flush with table. The blade tensioner works well but would prefer it on top front instead of rear. With a premium blade this thing makes beautiful cuts and does the job of higher end models for a great price. I also have a 20 inch dewalt for larger projects and this saw works JUST as well but smaller and ALOT quieter. I got this saw this morning and within 30 minutes of tweaking and setting it up i had made my first small project for my wife... My wife was diagnosed with two types of cancer two years ago and after many months of chemo and radiation treatments,TODAY of all days she got the call that she was cancer free and in remmission. So i made her the most fitting project i could think of. Over all the only complaint i have with this saw is the small allen key it comes with to change blades with. Add a 4 inch T handled allen key and it would be the perfect small project saw at an unbelievable price.. Granted i have only had it one day, i highly recommend and LOVE this saw!!! Pictures included of my first project and saw. GREAT JOB on this saw WEN! I will definately be ordering the 6 inch disc and belt sander at another great price!! June 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Truckster2 So far this scroll saw has worked just fine for me. I had to adjust the table when I first got the saw because it wasn't exactly 90• but close. The light vibrated so much when using the saw that it was unuseable. I taped it to the arm and that fixed that problem. I tried the unpined blade and it held just fine. It would be easier to change blades if they gave a T-wrench instead of an Allen wrench for that, but I could go buy a T-wrench. I did buy new blades because the three blades that came with it usually are of poorer quality. I have cut both hardwoods and softwoods with no problem, but it cuts best at a higher speed which is typical of any saw. My goal was to save a buck and be able to saw intricate items and so far this saw has done the job with no problems with the saw breaking down. I will have to see how it goes as time goes by. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by New to scrolling I purchased this saw because it had decent reviews for it's price & since I was just getting in to scrolling I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Saw states it takes pinned & pinless blades & came with both. I had trouble getting the pinless blades to stay in but noticed the blade holder didn't close tight. After contacting WEN customer service, they sent me new holders & a new table insert. I noticed there were burrs on the new blade holders so after filing the burrs off & installing, the blade holders now hold the pinless blades, which is what the problem was on the original holders. Now that my blades stay put I've been using the saw more and a new problem has developed. Some thing in the motor seems to be causing slipping or hesitating. My husband is at a loss as to what the problem is. I really wish I had returned the saw after the first issues. I had this saw less then 6 months. May 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Makin Sawdust! Not a scroller but I am a user of most other wood tools. I am not a pro but I can get it done. This is the first scroll saw I used since High School (what a memory) seeing I have been out of school for 40 years. I bought this to make a few projects and maybe a spare buck here or there with a few wood treasures. The first thing I did was order Olsen blades, pinless of course. I have made a few cuts already and the saw does what its supposed to, make cuts in material. It is not as smooth at higher speeds as I thought it might be almost seems very unbalanced. Well the way a scroll saw works is unbalanced but I thought this would be a little smoother. But for the price it can't be beat. If it continues to work it will be great. I bought the extended warranty. will never buy a lower priced power tool anymore without the extra warranty. April 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by work great Great easy to operate. Very easy to setup. Lots of fun to used. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome design tool I enjoyed learning how to use this saw and hope that I will continue to get better at it. My husband and I worked on a project that took us about 5 hours to complete. The blades that it came with made our lines wabbly. My husband used the phrase "walked it's own line." So be sure to get different blades to use for your project. Also, we had a problem with the saw moving on the table we had it on. It would be a good idea to bolt it down before starting. Other than that, I love this tool and I can't wait to start more projects. April 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by handy little saw Does everything I asked of it for small jobs. Like everything, more speed would've been great. This saw works as advertised and is a great value. May 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for small jobs It works well to do small scroll saw art and light mill work. About two weeks after I had it, the light began strobing to the point I couldn't use it. The air puffer works about half the time, but its easy to overcome both of those issues. May 10, 2016
