Customer Questions & Answers

Are these dowels oak or another hardwood?

I was confused on the description. It regards to other hardwood (birch and oak).
Asked by: Hoot
I just spoke the manufacturer Waddell, and they confirm that they only sell Poplar wood dowels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wooden Poles Drilling was easy and we used them to make tee pees for the grandbabes. Worked like a charm! The poles were straight and all uniform!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hot hardwood dowels The description says hardwood. When I ordered these they arrived on time but, were made of poplar. I was expecting oak like it says in the description. The quality of the poplar was not very good. I returned the items. The description needs to be more specific.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best quality I agree with the other reviewer, not of very good quality. Not sure about the material, probably poplar, but the dowel had a knot almost dead center along the length. Intended to use this as a replacement for my current 1-1/8" wood snow shovel handle which is way too short, hard on my back. I'll probably go ahead and try it rather than return it, wondering if it's going to break at the knot. The two halves of this dowel are quite straight on either side of the knot, but the dowel bends at the knot. Disappointing, couldn't find a 1-1/8" wood handle anywhere else. The current shovel handle is straight, untapered, as it goes into the shovel so this would have been perfect without any modification, except perhaps a little shortening. As far as recommending the product, it would depend upon how a person intended to use it. If poplar was OK for the application and it was intended to cut it into shorter lengths, perhaps this would be alright. Seemed safer to check "I would not recommend this product." If you read the product overview carefully, I think they are placing the "oak" under the category of "If a more consistent color and density is desired,..." The other reviewer thought they were claiming this dowel is oak, and I can see why, the way it is worded. Possibly it was worded this way to intentionally mislead. Note that they "continually source the world for a quality hardwood dowel at a good price" which implies the type of hardwood may change any time. I am told poplar is indeed hardwood, but one of the softest / weakest.
