I refinish decks professionally. I use the Deckmate exclusively because you can move fast. ALWAYS START WITH FRESH NEW STAIN! #1 Remove loose nails and screw down loose boards & always pressure wash dirty deck. Stain over dirt or wet surface = BAD RESULTS #2 Use Behr Wood Brightener for mold or mildew #3 Never use on rough stone or splintered surfaces unless you have several replacement pads. #4 Use a hand pad on vertical surfaces. #5 It is mandatory to stir the stain thoroughly & often or you GET BAD RESULTS. #6 NEVER leave puddles! #7 Barely spin open variable fluid control while moving on board back & forth till fluid flows down to pad gets an even coating. BE PATIENT while tubing & pad fills. Then keep moving forward. Adjust control according to how fast you move and thickness of material. TOO WET? Speed up or close down control a bit and keep moving till flow evens out. #8 Turn flat side toward flat edges. Know that when you turn off flow control that fluid in tubing continues to drain out till empty. Clean immediately & thoroughly with appropriate solvent. I use my Deckmate on multiple decks before I replace it.

I do not want to say all bad things about this. I like the device. It distributes the stain nicely. I had no problem controlling flow. My problem was that the pad kept snagging on the wood. and ripping our hunks. The wood is pretty new, was sanded first and I couldn't feel any rough edges before I stained but I have probably about thirty spots where hunks are now ripped out and there are numerous, two inch long slivers of wood embedded in the pad. I have used pads to stain before and never had this issue. It looks like this pad is more spirals than sponge/ brush texture so, it grabs any unevenness in the wood surface and just rips it out. If your wood in not new, I would steer clear and just use a paint pad and a pan of stain..

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by misirish Love this product! It is very easy to use and clean up.
I used this product on my almost 200 sq ft deck. I had never stained a deck before and had always used clear sealer. This tool made it so easy. I felt like a pro. The stain does come out very quickly but I learned to open the valve get some stain out and quickly close it again. Then I spread out the stain and it went on very smoothly and without lap marks. It would be a great improvement to have a control on the open and close valve so that you can control the speed at which the stain is dispensed. I used a little over half a gallon of stain. I will use this product over and over again. I loved it and the deck looks GREAT!

After having knee surgery, i wanted to find something that would help me stain the deck without having to kneel down. After reading the reviews I wasn't sure i wanted to purchase this product, but I did. I had none of the issues the others had, I did a 10x12 deck in less than an hour. I poured the stain in, applied and it cleaned up nicely. The next day same results, this product worked great! I wish I had purchased this product sooner, saved so much more time and stain.
The only thing i would change is to make brushes on the sides to get between the boards as well. and something to make getting in the corners easier as well.

This product does not work. The stain feeds too slowly. The middle brush does not work. It was a complete waste of time and money.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Verified Reviewer Didn't work well for me
This product came with a wagner spray gun that I purchased a couple of years ago. I finally decided to try it out. Big mistake. Even though I followed the directions heeding the warnings, I could not control the flow of stain to the pad. This caused to much stain to be applied and I had to work twice as hard to even it out. I am very unsatisfied with its results and have sanded down the deck and started all over using my spray gun with very good results. My deck mate is currently sharing space at our local landfill.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Homeguy Best 10 bucks you can spend
This is the best $10 you can ever spend. Speeds up the staining of deck boards 10 fold. Used the product the last 3 times I stained my deck. I have used both Behr and Olympic semi-transparent stains. Switched to Olympic this time as Behr changed their recommendation to require two coats. Olympic still does the job with one. Instruction provide cleaning instructions for future use, but for $10 just toss as you won't use for another 4-6 years depending on quality of stain.
